Hoping to head up to the BWCAW in the late fall this year.

We don't want to trip too far in - in case the weather turns on us.

We're thinking of heading into Mudro, or Sawbill area.

Any other thoughts?

At that time you could go anywhere you want and not worry about camp sites. That being said I would prefer a river EP or something with small lakes.

Good fall trip is Echo Trail entry to Stuart. Long portage but pretty flat and little used compared to Mudro. Easy day trip to Iron and/or the Dahlgren River. We did a quick trip up here last fall in some beautiful weather, was great.
Plus, very safe regardless of weather

Using the Sawbill area you could head east into the fire lakes. Just to the east is Baker, from there head north up to Kelly and Jack. That time of year combined with the Sawbill area would give you a very good chance at seeing some moose.

If you don't want to travel far then I would use entry point 50 or 51 and head to Snipe for at least two nights. Then head over towards or on to Long Island lake. If it's late Fall I would think you should find an open campsite along the way. If not Long Island has lots of sights.

+1 Did this area in October and enjoyed hearing the sounds of bull moose in the rut.

The Kawishiwi triangle area, with the Gabbros, were very pleasant in October - 2 or 3 trips. Easy to get to - Farm, Lake One, or Little Gabbro among more - and easy to go further or stay put. We got snowed in for a day up the Isabella river near Quadaga but it was all good.

Agree! Did Stuart Lake EP late fall a couple years ago and had some great day trips and fishing on nearby lakes (not so much on Stuart itself).
