The 4th annual Border Route Challenges are a go! The dates are as follows: meet up in Ely on Friday afternoon September 14th, get shuttle ride to entry point(s) on Saturday September 15th, and paddle/portage like heck to get to Lake Superior at Grand Portage Monument no later than Sunday September 23rd to catch shuttle ride back to Ely. So where is the start you may ask? This can vary depending on your goals (these are the same as last year).

1) Kruger Challenge- 260 mile route International Falls through Voyageurs Nat'l Park and all the BWCA
2) Voyageurs Challenge- 205 mile route Crane Lake though all the BWCA west to east
3) Moose Lake Challenge- 125 mile route Ely @ Moose Lake

A group called WaterTribe is setting up the details and making shuttle arrangements. More details are given at the WaterTribe website at the link below. The above start dates are going to be flexible due to Entry Point permit availability. All the challenge routes finish on Lake Superior at the historic Grand Portage Fort. The route to be followed should generally be the international boundary with Canada. Of course, longer routes are fine and maybe needed if the wind is blowing hard when you want to paddle one of many big lakes.

At least one person in each group needs to register with WaterTribe, pay $95, and have a Spot and PLB. All participants will equally split shuttling costs.
WaterTribe has a customized satellite tracking map that will show all groups all they progress along the route. This is why each group needs a Spot. InReaches do not work with their shared map.

Your safety is strictly up to you and your team, if you go as a group. The PLB that your group is required to bring is your last resort.

This is an unsupported challenge. Unsupported means no preplanned assistance such as a support crew, phone calls to home for navigation assistance, and food resupply. Take what you need from the start. What really makes this a challenge is the time constraint component. The harder you push the greater the challenge. Paddling legends Verlen Kruger and Clint Waddell hold the fastest known tandem time, International Falls to Grand Portage, at 80 hours and 40 minutes set back in 1969.

Feel free to express your interest in doing this and post any questions you may have here or you can email me direct. Post here if you’re looking to form a team, join a team, or have room for someone to join your team.

The WaterTribe site is where you register and see the current roster list.

I just registered on WaterTribe for EP 12/Crane Lake for the Voyageurs Challange, I got my EP permit a couple months ago.

Getting my gear weight and belly fat down, I bought a UL single tent at 1.5 pounds.
Hope I'm tough enough, I'm still unsure how I will do the Grand Portage. (Single or Double)
Looking foreward to seeing you again BeaV and meeting other paddlers.

I know my old "Ticker" can't keep up with the likes of you'all but I sure would like to do that border route from over there back to Grand Portage.

All signed up for the " big un". Hope I don't fizzle out along the way. Working on eliminating extra body fat too. I've lost 11#. if I lost 12# more , (not my goal 8# will do) it would equal the weight of my new canoe. S.R is working on it now. I pick it up in a week and a half. John asked me to stop on the way down and pick up a long time Mi. racers pro boat to bring to him. Maybe I could talk him ( the canoe racer) into going with me in a tandem. I could just ride along and eat bonbons. That's what I look forward to the most on the challenge, being able to eat all kinds of M&Ms and not worry about getting fat. I'm hungry all the time! I'm going to make a super light weight, 2 piece, partial cover for my boats to test this summer to see if it helps with wind. And BeaV, when you go by my camp near a portage again in the wee hours could you keep the racket down. Some of us do sleep.

Looking forward to it Lindy! And congrat's you're way ahead of most people. You already committed yourself, registered, and you're well into equipment fine tuning and physical training. Now if spring will come....

The rest of your reply is all true but this statement I must address!!

I'm surprised we're still friends. You'd think a kindred spirit would have been a little more welcoming to the needs of a fellow challenger. I had paddled 80 some miles on little more than an hours sleep. I was wet, cold, sleep-deprived, hungry, thirsty, and companionship-wanting when I busted through your campsite. A friendly welcome alongside a warm fire with a hot cup of coffee and some pancakes wasn't too much to expect, right?

Instead all I got was a gruff reply from a tent "hey keep the racket down, can't you read the sign!!!!?". In my near hallucinatory state, I looked around this camp for a sign. Finally through the fog that was my brain I found it. The sign was affixed to the bow of their canoe and it read "Grand Portage or Bust". I obeyed their sign leaving the camp with my head hung low and my paddle dragging on the ground.

That's my version of the story;-)

This year with your new super-charged Savage River Blackwater canoe, you'll probably leave me in your wake.

p.s. I like real maple syrup.

FYI:

There is only one permit left for EP 12, Crane Lake/Little Vermillion River on Sept 15 for any who wish to enter the Voyageurs Challange on that day.

I'll buy anyone a beer in Ely the nite before (14th) if they help me assemble my folding canoe at Crane Lake on the 15th. It can be a difficult 35 minute job for one person, two people can do it in under 20 minutes.
BeaV, I also hope you are quiet when you pass me, otherwise (No Maple Syrup for You) ;-)

Before and after pics.

Funny, I don't quite remember it like that. If you'd have placed your order ahead of time, I'd have gotten up, in the dark, and fried you and Russ some imaginary bacon, eggs and pancakes with 100% pure maple syrup and real butter. Fresh, hot extra caffeinated coffee too. We'll buy you a pancake breakfast after the challenge. :) I'm feeling a bit left out this year, but I'm not up to the whole challenge, mentally or physically. I even thought of meeting Russ at the start of the GP, and walking the 9 miles with him. I even offered to carry his pack, but he said that'd be against the rules. Mrs. Voyager

I'm in.
I am looking forward to participating in the Challenge. I always thought that events like this were the realm of elite athletes only- but this is far from the truth. In actuality, it is not a race for the win, but rather an opportunity for us regular mortals to undertake a real challenge and realize what a transformative process it can be. No doubt the obvious physical task is difficult (and rewarding), but the intangible consequences of undertaking such a challenge are perhaps the most beneficial and under-realized part:

--Working through the planning of gear, food, weather, navigation, and time management is familiar to all on this board, but is really tested/honed for a trip constrained to this length/time.
--The mental challenge of meeting/overcoming/succumbing to fears, unknowns, fatigues, and personal desires is just as difficult as the physicality of the challenge, but brings an opportunity for intense introspection and self-discovery. Growth begins just at the horizon of your current skill set. What are you really made of?
--The commitment to such a long-term goal means the effects of the Challenge are not limited to a single week, but rather impact life in so many different ways; long-term training/weight loss/increased health and fitness/motivation/personal discovery/growth/self confidence (and to some- an excuse to buy a new canoe ;).
--The inspiration you provide to others can lead to family/friends seeking challenges of their own. Your behavior and determination undertaking a difficult challenge is not hidden, and can serve as a positive model for others.
--The notion of what is 'challenging' is beautifully different for all that participate. The result can only be measured personally based on how you rise to meet the challenge you define. This is a rare time when failure does not mean absence of success. You really do feel the most successful when you've made yourself vulnerable to failure.
--There is an overwhelming sense of kinship being side-by-side with others who are undertaking a challenge with uncertain outcome. Triumphs and shortcomings are shared, celebrated, and understood. Those people with the Sisu to just make it to the starting line are some of the best people you will meet.

Don't underestimate the difficulty of this event, but if you are at all considering a try- I encourage you to make the attempt and step into the challenging and uncomfortable.

Last time though, we were promised a beer for finishing- if this isn't part of the deal then forget it.

I believe I already know the answer, but no harm in asking. The SOS function of the Spot Gen3 does not qualify as a PLB for this challenge? And if this is the case, what do you guys carry as a PLB? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The start date is the same for all three route options but the event description says you can choose a different start date or time. Your official time will be based on when hit the "OK" button on your Spot.

Everyone gathers for dinner in Ely Friday evening. If I was doing the Moose Lake route, I would pull my entry permit Friday, have dinner, and then drive myself out to one of the outfitters on Moose Lake. Stay the night there at a bunkhouse so you have a place to park your vehicle. Start paddling at daylight to take advantage of the morning calm wind conditions, hopefully.

No need for a shuttle for this starting location.

Worth asking but your hunch is correct. The Spot does not fulfill the PLB requirements. WaterTribe "required equipment" list describes what meets the requirements for a PLB.

I use a ACR ResQLink that fulfills the requirements. ResQLink
If you get the model with the "+" it floats. I don't need that as mine is attached with a lanyard to my PFD.

Are you allowed to stash gear if you don't need it anymore? I mean if you get to the grand portage you really don't need paddles or a tent etc. Are you allowed to stash stuff to be retrieved later?

Would Verlen Kruger approve of such behavior?

Tom, are you asking me specifically or others.
(That would be a question for BeaV and the sponser WaterTribe).

Personally, if I have already paddled and portaged 200 miles prior to the Grand Portage I will not sell myself short by stashing gear somewhere, unless it is some sort of emergency. I have 3 options for the Grand Portage.

1. Single Portage with my canoe over my head.
2. Single Portage with my canoe folded up in a back pack.
3. Single and double portage by leap frogging in 1/2 to 1 mile long sections. (Option 3 is what I think is most likely)

My reference comes from doing 2 mile long portages in AK as a double portage, that was not a big deal at all, my only concern is the time frame allowed for this challange and finishing within that.

My goal is to exit the Grand Portage (Single) with all my gear, and canoe over my head, with a body that is not too beat up.

TomT:" Are you allowed to stash gear if you don't need it anymore? I mean if you get to the grand portage you really don't need paddles or a tent etc. Are you allowed to stash stuff to be retrieved later?

Kruger might but Clint Waddell wouldn't is my guess. I spent a day with Clint this winter talking about their trip, looking at film slides, and other canoe talk. The purpose of their border route trip was to test themselves, not the avoidance thereof.

To fully get the most out of these trips, I would say carry it all. I think the biggest reason to do these challenges is personal satisfaction and growth- to finish within the eight days with all your stuff, and without help is the way to do this. But if a person can't... well like muddyfeet stated, "failure does not mean absence of success". If you gave it your best, it will still be an awesome experience. Maybe you won't get the coveted "Voyageurs Sash" at the award ceremony but you will be celebrating the accomplishment.

Secondary to personal accomplishment I would add this:

Voyageurs Challenge- We are following the path of the historic Voyageurs of old. They were there because they were packing supplies in and furs out. This is integral to why they were there and why we should carry our load. I am certain that no rookie Voyageur achieved Hommes du Nord status without carrying their load on the Grand Portage. However, if given a choice to portage or stay on the water and take a longer route, they would have stayed in the boat.

Kruger Challenge- We are trying to commemorate the route of Kruger & Waddell and their resulting record setting feat. Their route closely followed the Voyageurs Route (the border lakes) except they did take the shorter route from Rainy Lake to Namakan Lake by use of the Gold Portage through Kabetogama Lake- so this route or the longer route past Kettle Falls are both options. Unlike the Voyageurs, Kruger/Waddell packed light and traveled mostly nonstop.

One thing they all had in common was the navigation skills necessary to find their way through. Familiarity and map reading were key. GPS use negates this difficult aspect of the challenge, if we chose to use one.

Marcie, maybe you and I will have to take a shuttle to Prairie Portage, sit around for the day, cheer and take pictures as the Challengers go past. That would be more fun and feel more like we were a part of things than sitting back in Ely watching the SPOT messages. Though, I was told that I could not bring "Beers and Brats" to share. That would be against the "unsupported' rule or I would set up and cook!

Oh JJ! No GPS sounds risky. Dangerous and difficult to travel at night bumping into land that shouldn’t be. Am I heading to Hudson Bay and ruin?

What will you say when Fate comes from behind and passes by you in the middle of the dark night saying “You do not know where you are, all hope is lost!” Will your reply be, “I know my way now dear Fate, where you came from I have no interest in but where you go I will follow. For my way is yours and we will travel to the east where the land ends at the inland sea.”?

BeaV, I thought we talked about this the last time we were in GP, but maybe I only mentioned this to those grade school buddies from Skokie we shared (a lot of) whiskey with.

To be sure, Fate, while tempting, is to me, the less desirable twin. Her sister Destiny is far more alluring. Fate is the temptress but Destiny the reward. Fate will overshadow while Destiny will let you shine.

Fate will assuredly hover along side me and whisper of a coming storm. But, I must remain impervious. How you say?

I will be guided by the bright stars and moon above, calmed by the spirit of Verlen Kruger, inspired by the accomplishments of Clint Wadell, kept awake by the sounds of brother BeaV yelling LETS GO!, and energized by my ZRE Power Surge Light.

Should Fate whisper in my ear to warn me of a coming storm, I will yell back, "I AM THE STORM!". Destiny awaits me my friend and with the guidance of my brother BeaV, the Kruger Challenge will be all that I imagine it to be.

(you have the maps, right?)

Looks like we have more to talk about the next time we make Grand Portage.

In the mean time, I've never really cared for Destiny so let's do this- While on the Kruger Challenge, I will tempt Fate and you control Destiny?

I just used this quote on a work call about a major project that is rolling out through the media and the public on Wednesday. But I just gave some background and gave the quote as, "failure does not mean absence of success." I don't know if these times are such rarities. Probably most endeavors have elements of both success and failure.

I got a good response to the quote and hopefully people will still feel good when some interview or story gets things botched up a bit.

BeaV - I am inspired and challenged to try this. When I first joined this forum just a few months ago I read your trip report on the last Challenge and immediately thought I need to do that. I won't be able to this year but it is in my planning for next year. I will be hitting a section of this in mid-June on a trip into the BWCA with my brother. We will put in at Indian Portage and travel the border up to Gijikiki and day trip around the area. Given I will be new to solo'ing and rapid travel I will start with the shorter route but I am already excited and pouring over maps for some motivation for training. Thank you for your trip report and opening eyes to the rewards of pushing and challenging yourself. I am way past my prime and not planning on challenging the speed record but just wanting to push myself to complete something that is in itself a huge challenge to complete in the time allowed. I wish everyone well on this years challenge and I really look forward to reading trip reports resulting from it.

Selfsuffi: "BeaV - I am inspired and challenged to try this. "

That's awesome! When you're on your June trip this year and while on the border lakes, look to the east and ponder the idea "I can paddle from here to Lake Superior...". It was a motivating thought to me when I was not-catching lakers on Knife Lake some years back.

So I wonder, after you do this route, will you change your screen name to Selfsufficient?

Have fun with your planning. You should be able to do a search on this site to find previous years invites where you will find lots of useful info.

Hey guys! I'm planning on doing the border route from EP14 to Grand Portage, starting on May 15th. My trip partners are freaking out about the weather (somewhat understandable) but I am personally convinced that we'll be okay with ice off.

If for some reason we have to push our trip back a couple days, we'll have to change our route since that type of mileage cannot be made up.

So if that happens...count me in for the 2018 challenge! Like Housty mentioned, is it okay to enter at a different EP since all Crane permits are taken?
04/19/2018 10:31AM
housty9: "all the permits are taken for ep 12, can one start at another ep like 14 or 23, not sure were doing it yet might try our own challenge first."

housty9 and Bdubr-
Here are the options as of now:
1) join an existing group that already has an Entry Point 12 permit.

2) maybe a EP12 permit will be returned to the system if someone pulled one that changes their mind on either participating or maybe choosing a different date.

3) choose a different starting date- this is allowed per the WaterTribe information. So likely either start the Friday before and the Monday following that weekend where permits will be used up by the MNKC and MNVC. This may be a benefit for those who want a little more time or those who plan on being aggressive and don't want to sit around too long at Grand Portage.

4) I like the idea of allowing MNVC participants to start at EP14 for dates that EP12 are not available. I suggested this a while back but no official word back yet- I'll let you know if this becomes an option. This entry point would be almost on equal footing as starting at EP12.

5) the only other entry point option right now is EP25 Moose Lake (MNML)

I wouldn't let permit availability limit me from committing to the route-it may just be one more little challenge to overcome. It's an adventure afterall:)

"

Option 4 is now reality. So.....This will allow more people to start the MNVC the same day with just a slightly different starting location. Their paths will merge at Loon Lake. I did the math- EP 14 is 4.5 miles shorter but 3 additional portages. So travel time, if I were to start at EP 14 would be 1/2 hour shorter. To even this out, Crane Lake people will be dropped off first and the shuttle heading back to Ely can drop the EP 14 people next).
05/25/2018 09:47AM
Just a heads-up:

Shuttle arrangements for before and after the Challenges are starting to get figured out. So if you know you want to participate, I'd recommend signing up now so you can take advantage of joining a shuttle.

The deadline date for registering is July 8th at noon. So you can't procrastinate making a commitment for much longer anyway.

As of today, there are permits open. one for Saturday, Sept. 15 and one for Sunday, Sept. 16. Get'em wile they are hot!

Nordstjernen and I are registered for the Kruger Challenge! We snagged the last remaining permit for EP 12 on 9/16. There is one permit left for 9/15 and a few for Friday and Monday. Excited to give it a go! Best of luck to all, and happy paddling.

I am interested. I just am curious when this one starts and if I could partner with someone. I have a MN 2 we could use. "
Did you find an interested tripping partner yet?

I got my SPOT and PLB set up with watertribe yesterday, now I just have to pay the entry fee and I should be good to go.
I got hold of Adam at Piragis and am getting the shuttle arranged, he said that there is a Melissa who needs a shuttle to Crane Lake as well. Don't know who that is but if Melissa is entering on Sept 15th I'm guessing we could ride together.

PS, How difficult would it be to navigate Crane Lake to EP 12 without a map?
I have all the McKenzie maps for the route except Crane Lake. My abilities to print off an aerial photo of Crane Lake is a little limited.
I have no GPS.

Not difficult at all. A Chrismar will get you to the Loon River, then just go with the flow. The two mechanical portages are pretty quick and easy. You can portage the traditional way if you prefer.

There are currently 4 or 5 people starting at Crane and Melissa is one of those. You can see who is signed up by going to the WaterTribe site and clicking on "rosters" tab. Did Chief contact you to see if you wanted his help in organizing the Crane shuttle?

Map- what I did in the past for Crane Lake was just hand sketch the lake and write whatever bearings you want to get you to the narrows. Once you're in the narrows heading to Sandpoint Lake you're good. In the past, we launched at a public boat access just before Voyagairs Lodge.

BeaV,
This is the E-Mail I recieved from Cheif.

Subject: Shuttles

The group leaders for the MNVC2018 event should check in with Adam Macht at Piragis to setup a shuttle to the Crane Lake entry point. You should all be able to fit into one shuttle unless we get more people soon. Adam's email is adam@piragis.com. I already have two shuttles arranged to go to International Falls and one shuttle to return from Grand Portage. There is room in the return shuttle. We only have 2 or 3 using that shuttle at this time. End of E-Mail

I'm guessing we need to set up the shuttle ourselves through Piragis.

I talked to Adam at Piragis today and he penciled me in for a shuttle early Am, on Sept 15 to Crane Lake, I told him that a couple others would most likely need a shuttle to Crane Lake that morning as well.
I looked at Watertribe and see that besides myself, three others (Isaac, Melissa and Wayne) are leaving out of Crane Lake. If I am understanding everything correctly we need to get together to arrange the same shuttle and share the price.

Please correct me if I am on the wrong path on how to arrange this shuttle.

GrandmaL,

I'll send you my addy, thanks alot.

I regret to say that I won't be paddling the challenge this fall. Amid other adventures this year, my heart just isn't in this one enough to make the commitment. Best of luck to those paddling- may the wind be at your backs!

We'll miss both you Muddyfeet, and PaddlinJoe in Sept. I understand with a limited amount of vacation time Muddyfeet, that tripping with the family is something very special. Enjoy it while you can. Maybe when the kids are grown you can retrace your Challenge route with them. This Challenge will probably be my last hurrah, unless I try a shorter version next year.
07/09/2018 07:54AM
muddyfeet, in your own words- "Last time though, we were promised a beer for finishing- if this isn't part of the deal then forget it. "

I thought I clarified this....:)

Thanks for letting us know. You're still invited to join us at Grand Portage for the "after" gathering. Maybe bring the family, visit your Mom, and then swing by G.P.

Registration to participate is now "officially" over. Recap for the 23 folks signed up is:

Starting Point
Moose Lake - 2 paddlers
Crane Lake - 4 paddlers
Rainy Lake - 17 paddlers

Interesting tidbits-
All 7 paddlers who started in 2015 are returning
8 of the 9 paddlers who started in 2016 are returning
3 of the 6 paddlers who started last year are returning

Some of the returnees have participated in multiple years. So for this year there are 10 veterans and 13 new challengers. Looking forward to it!!!!

Anyone have any tips for high energy snacks or food to carry on this challange?

Looking forward to watching the flotilla paddle along the boarder.

Looking at the rosters I was curious to see that there are solo groups of four going in on the same permit. Are those groups intending to paddle the route together?

Safe paddling and travels to everyone!

Yes I am aware of one group of four solos paddling together. Two of them will be paddling Kruger Sea Winds. And one of those paddlers, ManitouCruiser, is the owner of Kruger Canoes. ManitouCruiser worked with Verlen Kruger for years before buying the company. Very fitting that he will be able to participate in the "Kruger Challenge".

And safe paddling to you on your own trip this fall!

Ya nuts in my trail mix is my staple. I go heavier on dried fruit and white chocolate in the mix for these Challenges, though. Nuts are the highest energy but being high fat may be hard for your stomach to deal with while exerting a lot of effort. You mostly want carbs with lesser amounts of protein. Other things I bring are peanut M&Ms, candy bars, granola bars, fruit rollups, jerky, athletic powder mixes, and string cheese(caution fat!) .

I have read that high content fatty foods don't digest well in your stomach during periods of athletic activity. I used to use Spam singles during the day but now I save them for dinner. I once gave my tripping partner one and his stomach hurt all day.

Unfortunately I will be a scratch for the Voyageurs Challange, an unexpected family event came up recently that I need to attend on the 20th.

I plan on doing a partial paddle using my Entry Point permit near Crane Lake Sept 15th, and will paddle to Ely (Fall Lake), this fits into my family commitment time frame.
I will explain more about the issue at the Dinner Friday nite in Ely.
Looking foreward to meeting fellow paddlers and wish you following seas.

I wouldn't call this a scratch, more like a modified Voyageur Challenge. Paddlingjoe did a very similar route last year. See you in Ely on the 14th.

Thanks, I was originally planning on paddling to Gunflint Lake, (and catching a shuttle to Grand Portage for the festivities) and see how I fared that far, before deciding if I felt I could do the Grand Portage.
Then that plan fell through due to commitments. (two high school buddies of mine from Alaska recently decided to do a drop in visit at the last minute on Sept 21st).

See you all on the 14th, I have my hotel reservation made, and will get GrandmaL plugged into my SPOT.

Thanks.
This is the worst time...just a few days to go. All I want now is to start!

-I looked at a few of my maps last night for the final time and packed them neatly away.
-I've packed my packs except for a couple items that I don't know if I should bring or not.
-Made some last minutes gear changes due to an injured team member not able to go.
-Making plans for before and after the Challenge.

I'm tired of details...let's go paddle and see what there is to see! My team of six is ready and no one is scared:)

I am looking forward to meeting all the Challengers in Ely Friday evening.

That nervous "pre-trip energy" is running high. I have packed and repacked. The computer, tracking info is sitting at the door and I am ready - We all just need to get going! The 20 of you have to start paddling for me to do my job. I will post on the general forum when it all starts so you can follow along. See you paddlers in Ely - the rest of you on the boards!

Sitting in a motel room in Ely. I had trouble sleeping last night, too many things on my mind. I know I'll have trouble sleeping tonight. I see the Pigeon R. is down to about 67 cf flow. Might make for more carrying down the English rapids, instead of pulling canoes. I see some east winds predicted, dread, dread. What me worry? Met some of the gang last night at the Ely Steakhouse : an interesting bunch of like-minded people. The whole gang will gather for dinner tonight. A grand time I'm sure. Now off to the Plum Bun bakery to carb load.

I think that would be a fun adventure. I may sign up for it next year with one of my friends. Just wondering what the extra $95 is for? Just asking.

Zwater: "I think that would be a fun adventure. I may sign up for it next year with one of my friends. Just wondering what the extra $95 is for? Just asking."

This fee in the past helped with paying for t-shirts, awards dinner, and other minor expenses incurred by the organizer.

To avoid any issues with the USFS, this fee was dropped this year. Everyone just paid for their own share of the trip costs as individuals. I expect this will be the new norm.
