Oh my....nearly forgot. Baggies and platform soles. A couple come to mind off the bat:
Brick House Mighty Mighty
Play dat Funky Music White Boy
Graham Central, KC and Sly....My my my Burn Baby Burn many more forgotten until I happen to hear them. Miracles by Hot Chocolate, Baggies, Platform Sole Elevator Shoes and a Don Ho big collar shirt. My my my. Cincy Mad Hatter Bar,Zorbas, and Reflections were hot spots in the Queen City. Then back home to bib overalls and painter pants. All the girls were crazy about Disco Floors in the big City and we were so glad to dress up and take them. A blast from the past.

MT, remember this one? Do You Think I'm Disco

This is the original song it was based on. Wow, I am impressed with that hair! Rod Stewart

Side note - this is my idea of good disco. Same time frame exactly. 1979. From 3 minutes on this is pure gold. The B-52's

Based on the title, I thought this thread would be an ode to the very heavy, but seamingly bombproof Old Town Discovery series of canoes, of which I have the 174 and hope to float it on rivers for many more years.

Whoops, maybe SV is right and I should mark this OT. Yup to much work for this guy. Heard a few tracks, decided I liked it and started thinking back......it's a bit foggy but I'm pretty sure I can remember a pair of platform shoes and some polyester bell bottoms (the Horror!).

Ah, yes!! I believe I still have that 45. This is the camp that I was - and still am - firmly entrenched in. Disco Still Sucks.
Was driving around with a friend the evening of Disco Demolition - really wanted to be there but figured it would be packed. It was. So we went to Venture and looked at records, then drove around some more & then saw how it went down on the news. A good friend went,.. I'm still jealous.

MT,

A DISCO post? LOL

My fav from the disco era was the Bee Gees "Staying Alive".

Back in the day ... I used to put on my polyester shirt, bell bottoms and platform shoes and head down to the big disco bars on Long Island NY on Saturday nights with my buds from Connecticut.

Heck, I am dating myself. Geesh ... I am the same age as John Travolta.

But I really was a ROCK fan back in the 70's ... I was an avid concert goer. Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Blue Oyster Cult, J Geils Band, Springsteen, Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who .... FUN TIMES

B 52's were a trip. I ended up seeing them in concert but never the Ramones which I actually liked.

Ended up seeing some Motown in concert but never any disco bands. Mostly a rock guy back in the day. Now I like Yanni and the Gypsy kings and contemporary Christian bands.

Just not crazy about what passes for music much these days. Then I have to hear about billionaire J-Zee talk about white privilege. Um, exscuse me, I didn't get the memo.

Disco always did and always will...suck.

Omg disco. Hated everything about it (except blonde). We actually listened to the guy Gary wilson . I’m sorry if you watched this. We sang this on our last trip along with Gary’s other big hit ‘you think you really know me?’

i LOVE disco!!! love the movie saturday night fever, love the beegees, donna summer..... it's music that gets your toes tapping and body moving.... good house cleaning music.

on the flip side, i really dislike this modern day country western music, much prefer the old artist like Jim Reeves, Charlie Pride, Conway Twitty...

5 will get you 10 that the anti disco crowd have plenty of tunes they like but wouldn't put in the disco category........."Oh, well thats not really disco (because I hate disco) but I like that song................. I just forgot about it" ;-)

Sort of like that first song I posted.........I didn't put that into the disco category or make the connection, I just knew I have always liked it. From a musician standpoint it is excellent.......piano and sax work fantastic!

04/06/2018 06:54PM
Some rock bands started keeping up with the disco trend and adding that back beat. I was a huge fan of the Kinks and really like this song. It's a disco beat for sure done by an old classic rock band.

Well you can tell by the way I use my walk, I'm a woman's man no time to talk...played at countless wedding receptions by wedding DJ's and every time the room goes off, from young to old - you haters have to admit this truth - same goes for most early Michael Jackson and Jackson5 songs

Jackson 5 and early Michael were NOT disco. Not even close.

There's a very good reason died....thankfully that era was not a total loss...we had Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, etc...real rock and roll.

"Haters gonna Hate!" It was a fun era! All of my buddies and I feathered our hair back, put on our bell bottoms and platform shoes and hit the Dixie Electric Company every Thursday and Saturday night. Women in panther print body suits and the big disco ball over the dance floor.....My wife and I were on a road trip last year and some where along the line picked up a disco station on the satellite radio. We chair danced and laughed for two hours....

In high school gym class we learned how to disco dance. It was the winter and for whatever reason they decided this was what we were going to do. It was basically line dancing.

Then I remember at one of my friends house parties while blasting our classic rock that we liked, a few of us started doing our line dance moves. That was good for a laugh.

Sort of fun and informative thread (If I do say so myself ;-)

I mean how else would we of known that Timatkn could dig the B-52's and Walleye 13 frequented the disco bars on Long Island and still has a man crush on John Travolta? Who knew? And TomT and I have something in common........both big Kinks fans back in the day.

But we might be wearing out our welcome ;-)

I will leave off with one of my favorites from "Drive By Truckers".........sort of the antithesis of Disco

It's just fun! The wackyness after the 3:00 mark is so cool. I was into classic rock at that time bought those first two B-52 albums then. Highly recommended listening.

They were called the worlds greatest party band. Here's a cool remix of a great tune. I have fond memories of blasting this in the car. My classic rock friends did not appreciate it. :)

No, of course not . . . just sayin that those songs always liven up a dead dance floor

I thought disco was edgy and new when it first came and then got canned later on. KC and the Sunshine Band probably the one of the worst big name bands of all time.
But the same happens to every style, how can todays canned country western compare to old Hank or The Outlaws?
How can the new rock and roll compare to The Stones, The Animals etc.?
How can anything compare to The Beetles or Floyd?
Of course my kids will think the same when they get my age only it will be some band like Pumpkins, or Nirvana.
These are my opinions of course, others might disagree.
But as in politics, I'm right of course and everyone else is wrong!!!

04/08/2018 08:09AM
I just saw Disco as a fad and a trend. It was basically the same drum beat, fashion, and dance moves. I was never one to follow trends and I never liked dressing up. And, as an 18 or 19 year old, you would have to physically drag me out on a dance floor.

Me too. At least I can appreciate the OT Disco CANOE for it's attributes. Nothing to appreciate about Disco IMHO? While the hordes were listening to Disco, wearing their polyester and high heels (And I mean the guys too if you didn't grow up then) in the '70's, my buddies and I chuckled and made fun of them. We were wearing jeans, having parties in the country, and listening mostly to that good southern/country rock like the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Skynyrd, CDB, Marshall Tucker, Pure Prairie League, etc. Then, for that "Quiet" time, when you were taking your girlfriend home or "Parking" we might switch over to a cassette of some of that good old Motown like the "Commodores" and the "Temptations." Lionel Richie's voice could charm the........well, use your imagination.

Actually, I really liked the "Jackson 5" and loved MJ's voice.

Whether you like Disco or not knowing the song Stay’in Alive by The Bee Gees can save the life of someone who is in cardiac arrest. The 100 beats per minute closely matches the number of chest compressions recommended by Heart.org. Many bands will immediately begin to play the song if someone collapses on the dance floor and continue until medical professionals arrive. Ah Ah Ah Ah Stay’in Alive Stay’in Alive.

I agree with Guest Paddler that disco music gets people on the dance floor and the Four Step Hustle is still taught as a beginning dance.

If you need a fix and want to get your money’s worth on a juke box play Burn Baby Burn Disco Inferno. It lasts half a night and your disco craving will be satiated by the time it is over. I hope so anyway.
