Today Seagull Lake up the Gunflint was 50 degrees F. and we also had that by Mille lacs with predicted 67 degrees by Monday by Mille lacs. I really believe much of the state will be ice free by May 11th.

I assume you keep the thermostat in your house set below 50F since anything warmer seems like it would be too hot for you...

And the bwca may become a grassland. Get a grip. One day is not a heat wave.

Supposed to hit 50 in Duluth today, last time it was 50 degrees was October 23, 2017.
That was nearly 5 months ago.
Heading back to Detroit Lakes in a couple hours, the extended forecast is 50's and 60's for the next 10 days in DL.
My bros have been fighting fires there already. I start firefighting this weekend.

You mean nearly six months ago. That is one of the reasons I have recently decided to move to Nevada after retirement.

I’m near Grand Marais. Yesterday, my wife reported 4-6” of snow at home near Rochester. I prefer ‘realist’. We’ve all seen what twists and turns the weather can take. I was hiking in knee deep snow yesterday. I hope the ‘positive’ thinkers are correct with their optimism. Time will tell.

Yesterday I watched as Fortune Bay drilled a hole on a bay in Lake Vermillion. Its likely there are places out on the lake that might have thicker ice. The ice depth was 33"-almost 3 feet.

Keep wishing people. I could be wrong but I don't see it happening in time for the opener on May 12th. Sorry-just being realistic.

2013 was about the same as this year as far as warm up time,ice on lakes went out from May 8th to May 17 on the big lakes by the BWCA. What makes a game changer is real strong winds and warm days and nights. I have seen lakes go real fast than. Brainerd lakes the snow is just getting off the lakes and fields are baring up.

The important lakes will be thawed... Haha. I'm with you pinetree... It'll go fast. It may cool down some, but for now it's looking real good.

Saw a herring gull on Burntside today. I give the ice a maximum of 21 days from first gull siting. Call it a proven scientific fact.

Skate skiing was fantastic.

You get a little snow crust on the lakes and you have the best skiing of the year without having to bundle up and long daylight hours. People really miss a great opportunity right now.

If we could count on this nice late spring with sunshine longer and milder temps, I would love love love to get more into skiing.

Instead, today I was craving this:

It is one nice day across Minnesota,skiied today and going fishing on the ice maybe for last time also.

04/21/2018 08:07PM
Well I went crappie fishing and got skunked. The small lake I was on this last week went from 24 inches to 18 inches and the 18 inches is good ice but much softer cutting thru. I give 11 days or May 2nd for ice out on this small lake.

Looking out my window, we had 20 in. of snow a week ago, today there is about 3 in. on the ground where it fell, totally gone in a lot of places. Of course the piles from snow blowing and plowing are more, but even they are down.

That is what we were talking about how fast so much snow has gone. Amazing.

The spring sun is high and hot. And it is out for a long time. Ice doesn't stand a chance...

63 degrees F. and deer ticks out today by Mille lacs.

04/24/2018 09:03AM
Skied yesterday until the slush ice collapsed into simply slush. Long, slow, wet trip back to car. Hope it holds better today. Woke the last two mornings to persistent drumming of Ruffed Grouse. Swamps along Echo Trail opened yesterday.

04/24/2018 09:22AM
Its nice if it gets cold enough in the morning so you get a crust for skiing.

Talking maybe 80 degrees in part of Minnesota next week. Ponds are opening up around Brainerd .
My skiis are resting now as of last Saturday now,until next year.

Plenty of ice fishing still going on in Perham. Tullibee, mostly. 4-wheelers and all the gear. Shores still pretty locked up.

Well today is April 28th and the lake I fished last Saturday is ice free this evening. 18 inches in 7 days. The warm temps and strong winds some days wiped out the ice fast.
Most of the lakes in the Brainerd area are open around shore and ice very dark. I think outside of Mille lacs maybe,we will be ice free here before the opener. It is speeding up fast and many lakes maybe by next Saturday or sooner. Talking 76 F. degrees and very windy Monday. Ely will be like a week behind Brainerd many years. This year?

04/29/2018 05:25PM
Some puddles and a bit of open water here and there can be seen in this web cam of Mille Lacs. I have no idea or guess as to when it would be ice-out there but it's a bit of progress. It will happen when it happens.

04/29/2018 07:36PM
Lakes in Southern MN are open, some fully, some mostly and a few with only slush around the edge.
Rain and 80's predicted for tomorrow so that should finish them off.

~~~
04/29/2018 08:29PM
Many lakes in the Brainerd area lost close to 20 inches of ice in the last 8 days were getting thin and will have ice out before open except for maybe 4 lakes?
04/30/2018 06:20AM
Its pouring rain right now in Brainerd and windy today. By next weekend a week before opener we will have lot of open water.
