Our group booked permits on two different dates due to prior commitments. These commitments have now been worked out. After checking all the permit rules, I believe there is no way to transfer it. I would like to help someone on the site who may need one. I don't know how fast it gets reposted after cancellation. If someone knows, I would work out the timing to give someone the best chance to pick it up.

The permit is for Entry 33 Little Gabbro Lake Sunday, June 3, 2018. If someone is interested, let me know and we can try to make the timing work.

I don't need one but I wanted to thank you for doing this. If I recall correctly, that's a 2 permit EP and it's gonna be tough this time of year to get the date you want.

Thanks
Was just hoping to help out a fellow paddler who may need one. Maybe someone that may get iced out with an early permit. The E.P. is a 2 a day and from the permit research posted here EP33 is the most booked for the season. My group is going in the week after.

So you booked 2 permits knowing you would only use one........
And publicly admitted it.... whoa....

well, that's not quite so, yogi. read the first couple of lines of the original post again.
could have played out in several ways in regards to two separate small groups who chose or had to modify their plans.

Well I knew someone from the "permit police" would chime in. I don't have to explain my self or how many permits I book to anyone. So to appease the permit gods, this is how it worked out. "I" booked a permit for our group for the closest date available to our trip date. One member of our group had a conflict with that date. That person went and booked a permit that worked for the whole group, thus 2 permits. I posted that I was giving up a permit, to try to help out someone on the board who may need one.

I guess I could have been a real dick about it and canceled it a day or two before entry and let it go unused. Would that have been a better choice ???

I guess it is like they say: "No good deed goes unpunished"

I suppose it was just bad communication between "i" and another person in our group.

I don't work for the permit police. I just call it like I see it....

And there's that word again popping up.

Whats the issue Yogi? If I am reading it right it sounds like the group was initially going to have a member join them at a later date on another permit because they could not join on the original entry date, thus 2 permits being booked. The conflict forcing the group to break into 2 has been resolved so they can all share 1 permit again allowing the 2nd permit to be canceled. Sounds to me like everything is on the up and up and the 2 permits were originally booked because they thought they were going to need them, instead it turned out that they didn't. No big deal.

Flatlandpaddler,

I appreciate you trying to let someone from this board get the permit.
If it was a few days earlier I would probabally take you up on it, I've always wanted to go to Gabbro.
I will be up in that area on Memorial weekend and I cannot spend a week or more there.

I cancelled a permit for Gabbro in 2015 because I got sent to Alaska and I tried to let someone from this board have it, I did not have any luck.

We already booked elsewhere for the next weekend, but it is nice of you to offer the cancellation timing to this board.

Often it is a very fully booked entry point. We went early June a few years ago. Little Gabbro, Gabbro and Bald Eagle seemed to have a lot of base camp to fish folks like my group. Maybe why they only let 2 per day in. We had great fishing. Hope you have fun.

If you use bug dope, have an extra can ready in the car. That parking lot and entry portage was the buggiest place I have been in the BWCA. The lakes and campsites were fine, but that entry point... insane.

Not to feel the need to explain myself either.so I won't.

What I also feel is he posted on 4-29 that he was canceling the permit.Fine , cancel it.
Don't hang onto it for 8 days while he notifies everyone on this board to get a hold of him to try and coordinate the cancellation.
Cancel it asap and then notify people on this site.

Wanted to follow up on this - taking all the judgement out of the situation, how would one effectively transfer their permit to a friend? It sounds like I need to cancel and then simply have my friend keep hitting refresh on recreation.gov? Is there a more guaranteed way or is this the best option?

Can you edit your permit reservation to list your friend as an alternate trip leader? If so that gives him the ability to pick up the permit. You may need to also adjust the number of people on the permit as well. If you can't do it on the website maybe give them a call.
