Simple product....why is it that I either fail to bring some or wind up not liking the smell or oily feeling and not using it. Any favorites that don't have a scent and are not oily or greasy?

I was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic melanoma last November and the best sunscreen is long sleeve UV block clothing. There are several companies that make a good product but I've found I like Tasc Performance the best. I'd also recommend a Tilly hat. Thankfully advances in treatment make the outlook for this cancer exponentially better than just 7 years ago. All I can say is use something regardless. Under Armour makes some great fishing clothing as well.

Good advice, thlipsis29. Hope you're doing well and getting better every day.

Thanks Jackfish! I live in Rochester, MN, in the shadow of Mayo Clinic, and have a truly world-renowned melanoma specialist, so I count myself very blessed. Despite the advances in treatment options, however, the best thing you can do is do everything you can to avoid prolonged exposure to UV rays. As I'm sure several other members on this site know from experience, cancer sucks. Thankfully I'm still able to plan a trip this year, but the clothing will be very different from years past.

For what it's worth, I wish I would have taken the advice of this song when it came out in 1999: Sunscreen

I agree with the Tilley hat and a buff. Last year we had 4 straight days of blazing sun clear skies and flat water. Sounds great in theory but, in reality it killed the daytime fishing and became quite the endurance contest. Last time I ever leave my Tilley hat at home. Honestly I don’t like wearing the buff but I bring it for nuclear sunny days. We also take t shirt in a can otherwise know as UV50. I have found from golfing that putting sunscreen lotion on well b4 you go into the sun will allow the lotion to absorb, be more effective and waaayyy less greasy. Once your out in the sun it’s really too late to apply as it sweats right off. These trips aren’t for the meek. Be careful out there.

You can do as the ancients who inhabited this land years ago, cover yourself with ash. Not greasy, oily, or smelly. There’s an abundant supply waiting for you at most campsites.

Seriously, you do need to cover up and protect yourself.

Its more difficult to find since it was considered a breathing hazard to kids, but I like the easy application of spray-on sunscreen.

Thank you all for the advice. I do wear a long sleeve UV tee and a hat. I have tried the buff and I really don't like them. I typically wear shorts as well so I definitely have a couple areas I need to apply sunscreen too. I was more wondering if there was a specific product anyone has had success with that wasn't greasy / oily all day long. I will get one advertised as such and take BnD's advice and put it on early and try to give it more time to soak in before I get out in the sun.

Thlipsis - I wish you well in your treatments and recovery plan. I will certainly follow your advice and keep protected. When I was younger I never did and I regret it.

Thank you all!

Selfsuffi,

Of all the sunscreens I've tried, this Neutrogena product is the least greasy I've ever used. I put it on my face and neck every morning. It still leaves a slight film, but I honestly don't know of a product that doesn't. It's just some are worse than others. I've just gotten to the point where I'd rather sweat with long sleeve and light weight pants than completely trust in sunscreen. My dermatologist told me some outrageous percentage of people don't put sunscreen on properly (like a half hour before you're in the sun and re-apply every 4 hours...) so the right clothing is much more effective. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer

For what it's worth, I had no external spot or malignancy; mine started internally with a swollen lymphnode on my shoulder which isn't uncommon. This also means to get UV rated sunglasses because your body can absorb the UV rays through your eyes. Thanks for the support.

I will give it a try. I have been putting off have a couple small spots on my arm's. A good friend of mine just went through having a section of his scalp the size of a softball removed for skin cancer. Opened my eyes up to the severity of what looks like nothing may be very serious and potentially life threatening. I have an appointment next month.

Try the No-Ad Sport Sunscreen - it's really not bad as far as oily, greasy feeling shortly after you put it on. I've also gone to the sun protective clothing (after having quite a few spots removed) as being easier and more effective; also probably cheaper in the long run if you're out a lot and apply properly.

Second on the NoAd. Works great, cheap, and one of the least greasiest.

I thought Neutrogena had an 8hr product a few years ago but I can not find one now. My biggest problem is reapplying every 2hrs. Getting a biopsy of a probable 2nd BCC myself.

we are trying the deodorant looking sticks that u rub on specifically where u want it... therefore none on hands, ever. :) also, no rogue spraying accidents.
coppertone sunscreen stick 1.5 oz

we may bring one of those travel spray ones specifically for the wife for her part in her hair or other places that the stick cannot get to

also: protective clothing/hats/bandana

+1 on UV clothing and No Ad sunscreen. I've recently added sun gloves to my arsenal of sun protection. I also prefer a sun mask and cap to a full brim hat. I started using protective clothing when I realized that I am very diligent in applying at the beginning of the day, but usually miss reapplying before I start to burn.

Same here. Can’t stand the coconut smell.

No Ad all the way for no smell.

On the other hand keep in mind if you want to truly block the sun and not just screen it look for products with Titanium or Zinc as the primary ingredient.

I buy a cheaper Equaline brand of UVA/UVB sunscreen at SPF 50 or better. It does not smell and is not oily -- more like a face cream or lotion. It works well. Gloves, bandana, large floppy canoe hat from REI and long sleeves/pants. Breathable materials help keep it all bearable even in the hottest of the dog days of July.

Last year, I even added a pair of sun-blocking fingerless gloves that I found next to the buffs at Cabelas. I thought that they worked great along with my Columbia Blood and Guts shirt and pants.

Personally, I use Reef Safe sunscreen from Tropical Seas

Marine safe, and biodegradable.
