We acquired one on clearance at fleet farm and are debating to bring for a backup, in lieu of a mini sawyer, to be able to get water on the initial portages, and if needed.
but, we will be entering in some most likely very unclean water (stuart 19) and won't have access to a good water source for approx 5-6-7 hours. Does anyone have experience using this specific water filter in similar situations that we will be entering?
We understand that it may clog the filter, just wondering how fast.. We will bring nalgenes filled with water (liter, each) along with "cameling up" before intital portage will be observed, per usual, but perhaps we will need additional water along the route and will have only river to choose from

Thanks!

Don't overthink it, filters are to be used otherwise why bring it?
Just fill up when you're out a bit from shore, if you're really worried use a bandanna over the bottle opening to "filter" the larger chunks out of the water when you fill up.
I have a katadyn bottle filter, used it as my sole water source on a 5 day trip, no issues.

I agree with pamonster - I just use mine whenever, wherever. You can backflush the filter if you need to, just keep the syringe handy. You will need enough clean water to fill the syringe, so take a small amount with you. If it slows noticeably, just remove the filter from the tubing, insert syringe of clean water in clean side, flush per instructions, and reattach. I doubt you'll need to do it before you reach your destination. You can turn the mini filter into a gravity filter if you want - just need a couple of bags, fittings, and some tubing.

i had made the gravity system with sawyer mini, thus asked if it was a preferable backup, am familiar with backflushing, have a platypus as well to use in camp. just looking to make sure we can actually do what the bottle says, since it seems so easy! lol thanks

While I agree with everything said here, you could also bring an extra 2L platypus or two full of fresh water. That should get you to Stuart without the need to filter along the way. It's not like an empty platypus takes up any space if you didn't use it the rest of the trip.

false. 5-10 lbs of weight is a lot to bring on top of 8 days worth of stuff, single portaging,. (2 people)
if we wanted to bring 10 extra lbs, We would be lugging my depth finder in.

We hope the water bottle works better than filtering through these comments that aren't addressing the question..my wife and I are far from newbs, we are just inquiring about a specific product. :)

The Sawyer water bottle filter is great - We use them in the bottle during the day and hook up as gravity in camp. just keep your syringe to back flush handy!

Katadyn be free is perfect for water on the go. Its has the fastest/most flow I have ever seen in water filtering. It also folds down to nothing. No backflushing needed. Just rinse the filter. Fits easy into any of your pockets.

In theory one person on a day trip could just bring the be free (20 oz) and squeeze clean water into everyone's bottle. For more storage it is also compatible with the Hydrapak Seeker, which is a 2-4 liter super compact water storage bag.

I bought one for my brother for his bday. Everyone that has used mine has been impressed by how good the flow is.

I use a Gravity works 4 Liter system at camp. Its fast, easy to back flush and has never failed me.

I think each tripper should have a Be Free and then use the Gravity works at your site.
