I am heading into the Atikokan entry on Batchewaung lake on Monday and will be there all week. Is anyone catching them right now and can you tell me how deep they are and what are they biting on? Thanks in advance!

I like to catch them right in the corner of the mouth. ( I know, everybody is a comedian these days).

Who know what's happening until you get where you are going. Preparation favors the wise. I would be prepared to fish shallow and deep.

I would take a spin and look around while dragging a rebel or savage gear or real image crawfish imitator crank bait and try and get a few clues.

If my heart was set on smallies I might seek smaller water if there was nothing happening on the big lake.

When you say "there," do you mean on Batch and Pickerel? Or are you planning to head into the park a little bit?

Ok...Try to camp someplace that gives you access to big, clear (and colder) lakes as well as smaller lakes. A few degrees' difference in water temps can make a BIG difference, so you're more likely to find them if you have access to both kinds of lakes.

With as cold as it has been, I'd target a few smaller lakes, or very, very shallow north bays on bigger lakes.

Water temps, will dictate when and where you catch them this early in the year.

Tubes, Jigs, shakey head, swimbaits.......oh and the mighty "magic bait " :) :) .

Have fun.....I'm not going this year. First time I will miss a trip in a few decades :( .

Later,

Geo
