Any word on the potential for a fire ban in the Ely area within the next week? Did you Ely folks receive any rain this past weekend?

Burning restrictions are still on in the area for 5/21/18. But i doubt we will hit a fire ban. So campfires in rings should still be allowed.

I think the entire north St. Louis / Lake county area got about a 1/4 in of rain this weekend. Could still use a bit more in my opinion.

Is it just me, or does the map on that link make it look like a permit is required? Maybe that doesn't impact campfires?

Q: When is a burning permit not required?

A: A permit is not needed:

For a "campfire"—a fire set for cooking, warming, or ceremonial purposes, which is not more than 3 feet in diameter by 3 feet high, and has had the ground 5 feet from the base of the fire cleared of all combustible material.

When the ground is snow-covered — by definition, when there is a continuous unbroken cover of snow 3 inches deep or more surrounding the immediate area of the fire, sufficient to keep the fire from spreading.

For a fire contained in a charcoal grill, camp stove, or other device designed for cooking or heating.

For a fire in an approved burner, and there is no combustible material within 5 feet of the base of the burner, and it is in use between the 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.

Also your looking at two different scenario's. The US Forest service can put a campfire ban fro the BWCA regardless of what the Mn DNR does.

I just got off after prescribed burning 500 acres in the White pines of NW Minnesota, I had 3.5 miles of fireline and only had a few spot fires across my line that my crew quickly caught.
In a nut shell we are drier than the Ely area, and our fire behavior was not that bad, so I would not expect camp fire bans in the Superior NF till after Memorial Day if at all for the next month.

IMHO, Camp fire bans may be a possibility if the Superior NF does not recieve measurable Precipation in the next 2 weeks.

Just got in from a much smaller controlled burn. But yeah, it couldn't have gone better. I have the impression a fair amount of rain is coming this weekend... Maybe White Wolf can expand... Haha.

Leaving for the Insula/Alice/Thomas area in about 7 hours. The rain the area (Arrowhead) received this past wk-end was a God send. Without it, likely camp fire bans as RH (Relative humidties were in the teens today) With the recent rain buys time for the this late week, but that appears to be dwindling in amounts and coverage but still should be enough to help things along.

Any predictions on a month from now? I'm headed up the 20th-24th and no campfire would really suck.

The forest service rarely calls for a complete fire ban in the BW. Most of the time the forest service puts in place a fire restriction. Usually no fires until after 7:00 pm....but a lot can happen in a month.

Most of the rain with higher amounts has missed the heart (central) parts of the BWCA and gone into Canada or N Cook cty or further S towards Grand Rapids and Duluth -- like tonight.
