I just got back from Seagull Lake. The lake was cold but definitely ice free. The walleye were even done spawning.

But I still found ice...

Actually, I found ice on Memorial Day in 2015 or 2016. There is a little creek that flows through a dense patch of cedars. The creek must back up and form several feet of ice. The cedars keep the ice shaded and prevent melting.

I checked again this week and found several feet of ice. I chipped off some big chunks and took them back to camp. It was nice to have ice for some bait smelt. It was also nice to have ice for cocktails in the evening...

Has anyone else found unexpected ice?

I found a little bit of ice on the portage between Crooked and Tuscarora this past Saturday, the 19th. It seemed so out of place, since it was the only ice I found over four days and forty-plus miles of travel...

There's still ice along some shady stream sides near my house north of Two Harbors. Ice can linger into early June in some years in some shaded nooks and crannies in the BWCA/Quetico.

Last year on Wine lake on June 4th. Ice flow off a cliff, south side of lake, shaded by a cedar grove

Whew, finally had to look.
I thought this was another thread about bringing "ice into the BW" ;-)

The late season ice always goes into our drinks at the end of the day.
