I am helping a group of first-timers with planning their mid-August trip... a Lake One entry. I could answer a lot of their questions but one thing I wasn't sure about was the extent to which the Pagami Creek Fire of 2011 may still affect their experience. So, of course, I wrote to Lynn at VNO. I'm sure she would have no problem with my sharing of her excellent and detailed response:
"The Lake One chain has come back fairly well but like you said, has some spots which will show the fire, some more than others.
The north half of Lake One, Lake Two and Three are just fine. The areas of Rifle, Bridge and that northern area were not touched at all & are nice and quiet, being away from the main flow of paddlers as well. The south end of Lake Four & a good portion of Hudson was affected by the fire. Lake Four is more narrow than the other of the chain, so that is more easily seen. The southern third of Insula was affected by the fire and yet there are spots even there where the fire jumped and didn't hit.
South of Lake Three and south of Four, at Horseshoe, Wilders and up to the southeast end of Hudson were hit and will definitely show fire damage. Interestingly, where the fire started, Pagami Lake and Pagami Creek are greening up pretty fast, probably because there are more lowlands there and never were a bunch of big trees. I had someone take a trip almost or to Pagami Lake and they said it was now pretty nice & green. That is a place I want to travel this fall, to check out myself."
