Cabelas had scatter raps on sale for under $4 each so i picked up a few shallow runners. Anyone use them before, how well do they work on smallies or northerns in the BWCA?

I have one of these but I have not caught anything yet. I did not have time to really try it yet. It looks like it would be outstanding for Smallmouth Bass. It moves like a Super Spook zig zag motion. Like a wounded minnow swimming wildly.

I like the SCM11 in blue, silver and gold alburnus colors. Also a SCR Shad in red. Good luck with them here. Mostly wallies at/after dusk, a few smallies and a couple small pike. Cast then a big sweep to get them down. I really like the SCM11 for night fishing wallies.

I have used them. In my hands, they are not the most effective Rapala. I was really enthusiastic, but if you have not already invested, I wouldn’t. The original floating is still king. Shad rap, husky jerk and rattlin’ will always have a place in my tackle box (and my heart!). The jigging raps are great. Heck, if Rapala makes it, I’m probably buying at least three. But frankly, outside of the five I mentioned, I think the rest are marketing and line extension. For that price, there are probably tons of other lures that will work better. Bandits come to mind.

I have had many days where Scatter Raps far outproduced "normal" crankbaits. Other times, they've been worse. We use them primarily for trolling, not casting.

We have trolled them with good success for Walleye.

Do you fish them fast or slow, i thought i read someplace you fish them slow or they will roll and the action isnt as good, then another person said fish them fast?

I don't usually troll faster than 2.5 mph, so I can't speak to very fast applications, but they work at that speed and slower.

When I used to slaughter the big bass in the St Johns Marsh (Lake St Clair) in the early spring I used to use a 8' fiberglass steelhead rod (SST Shimano rod) and I would make radical barrel rolls with the rod while I was reeling (exhausting). This rapid circular motion would really snap that original rapala and it would "scatter" left and right and all over the place. It was absolutely devastating with the light line I used. The scatter rap would do exactly the same thing I believe. I own one and liked it.

For the scatter to really "happen" as intended I would not tie direct. Get a fas snap (have I mentioned those before?) and use light line and a continuous jerky retrieve with brief little pauses thrown in. (Yes I know some would suggest that I excel at that sort of retrieve but nobody is perfect).
