So I was trying to give SoMpls some info on Leech.... I looked up a friend's facebook page, to see what he had posted about a recent trip. I paged down a little bit, and ran into this post from last winter:

(Note: Jack is Pat's, high school age son... OTIS, is a fairly young adolescent, Golden Retriever... Both of Pats kids ski, he was probably at his daughters ski meet. Normally I would think treble hooks, are spelled, treble, not trouble, but in this case, I it's probably appropriate):

"Patrick Nelson
February 6 ·

So today when I’m three hours north of Minneapolis at Giants Ridge in Biwabik Minnesota for the section 7 ski meet. I get a call from Jack saying?? Emergency!! Otis got into Jack’s tacklebox and ate a crank bait with two trouble hooks. One was buried in his upper lip the other was buried underneath his tongue in his tongue. Jack and Ben were able to wrestle and hold Otis down, hold his mouth open got the treble hook in his upper Lip out fairly easy and the after several Battling tries, cut the bottom of the tongue hooks with a wire cutter at first. Three hours later when I got home, the three of us wrestled him down held his tongue up and were able to extract the two cut off hooks from the bottom of his tongue.
I hope this Dog learned a lesson!"

=======

Becareful with your dog, and their access to your tackle box.

Fluffy beast chomped a crank bait! I love goldens. Well now what can we learn from this? Keep the tackle box away from the four legged's yes but what else? Ah yes...Golden Retrievers prefer crank baits over soft baits or jig heads:) I wonder what color it was and might it have had a rattle in it to entice the innocent curiosity of a wanton sniffer! I will have to pass this intellectual break down over to MT and get his professional opinion on it. I got it! I bet it was fish attractant that does not work on fish but works on dogs!

What I have been advocating as of late is the removal of all hooks. In true modern sporting ethos and politically correct ethics we should not be using hooks anyway. This potential tragedy and disaster could of been averted with a few government imposed mandates which would not only benefit our fish stocks, but would also prevent errant injuries to fisher people due to erroneously self imbedded hooks..........and, apparently, keep our faithful canines safe as well.

I'm with MT. I haven't used hooks in years now. You really gotta let 'em take it, though, and then gently reel. True sport. IMHO you're not really fishing unless you are TH (totally hookless.) Quetico is set to go TH next year.

I can totally see this happening. Lures smell like fish so they think it is something to eat or maybe a toy. My cat once got into my fly fishing stuff and was playing with a feather streamer, did not get hooked though. #ban all treble hooks now.
