I'm cruising E-bay looking for a used GPS to take on my next trip this fall. I'm not looking for the most expensive- just one that will get the job done. I was looking at the Garmin E-trex line- basically I want to leave breadcrumbs/navigate to portages.Suggestions?

You should be happy with the Garmin 60,62 or64 if you have topo maps in them. An E - trex Vista was my least favorite Garmin.

I use an e-trex works great for me. There are so many things you can do with it. I would recommend purchasing the book GPS Made Easy by Lawrence Lethan if you get an etrex. The book is written around that very GPS

The Garmin 60CSX, 62 series and 64 series are not the cheapest but they're very popular because of the rugged build. Be sure that whatever you get allows you to store maps on it.

I use my phone. I open the maps ap so it locates me, then put it on airplane mode before I loose service. It tracks me every where I go. Used this method on Brule, Seagull and Saganaga. You will not be able to use satellite image it come through cell service. Easy way to test is to open maps and then put your phone on airplane mode and see if it tracks you while your driving. I carry a solar panel to keep my phone charged.

I have an etrex venture hc I would sell you for 40 bucks. H stands for high sensitivity C is for color. Not fancy but does allow you to track your journey and you can put in waypoints so you could store entry points or portages. No chip for adding maps but has a simple basemap on it. You can google it to see the features. On quick search on cl I see one for 75 so I think price is fair. For a fellow flying moose papa. :) that is what the grandkids call me. You can call me Pete
