Hi there,

We are planning a labor day weekend trip to basswood and will be entering at Mudro. In case the weather is blowing really big, we need an alternate route. My natural inclination would be to go to Fourtown and disperse from there. We'd like to end up on a good fishing lake that is within 3-5 hours of the EP. Any suggestions on a good lake to shoot for? We are totally noobs to this EP btw.

Thanks!

Fourtown or Boot would be fine alternatives although the wind could still get to you on those lakes. You could also head up to Basswood River and camp near Lower Basswood or Wheelbarrow falls. Smaller water and good fishing. The Horse River is pretty and won't be prone to rough water in the wind. Getting to LBF from Mudro in 5 hours shouldn't be a problem if you keep moving.

Heading west through Fourtown and north a few lakes will bring you to Thunder Lake. From there you can portage into Beartrap and see if you can snag the 5 star site and be the only ones on the lake. The DNR census numbers for walleyes are extremely high in both Thunder and Beartrap. The surveys are pretty old but I know I have read many times about the walleye fishing on Beartrap being pretty good. Numbers are actually higher on Thunder. Beautiful area too.
