I just thought I would take a moment to thank the members who helped me plan and guide me on my first trip. We pulled out a day early because of some predicted rain and that although we caught fish we had to really work for them. I think my paddle partner is out for the next one though. Myself, I would like to take the lessons learned and try some smaller water or a river system next time.

We seen a bear an hour and 20 minutes in swimming 50 yards ahead between islands. I knew it would be desolate despite being on a motor lake but there were times where 6 hours would pass before we would see anybody or hear anything.

I had posted our pack list before going in and couldn't respond but will so that it may help others be we took out a lot of extras ad still had too much. I will do more dehydrated and freeze dried in the future as it is lighter and easier to prepare.

I would also invest, yes invest in a quality canoe seat that doesn't slip and slide when you are getting situated. Being able to lean back on the water is beyond words when you have been paddling all day.

The Souris River Quietico 18.5 served us well. My partner was about 200 pounds, about half my weight. We didn't set any speed records but at 6'2" and pushing 400 pounds I didn't expect to either. It was a stable platform to fish from. If I bought one of my own though the rear seat would be moved forward about 4 inches and the rear thwart would be moved ahead to make more clearance for getting in and out. The thwart was fine once in but made entry and exit awkward.

For anyone reading this that may be larger and thinking about doing something similar I would say do it. However, know and be realistic about your limitations. Like I said I am a big guy and I had a great time. I huffed and puffed carrying our tarp, tent and everything that goes in the tent but it didn't do me in by any means. When your out there take your time and just enjoy yourself. And again thank you for all the advice.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad everything wasn't a total shock and you were able to have a decent trip. The first one is always a learning experience and I continue to learn even after about a dozen trips. Sometimes it takes me a while to get comfortable with even trying a new idea. I'm sure you will take the lessons learned, make adjustments, and have a more enjoyable second trip.
