I've worked an entire year to plot the various waterfalls throughout the state, creating a custom Google Map. After I was nearing 200 waterfalls, I discovered that there were books on the subject. After going through the books, I also realized that the map I created has more waterfalls listed than the books on the subject do. I've since worked to pull all the data from my map into a website:

www.fallsmn.com

I've set out to document all the waterfalls and mills throughout the state. I couldn't have done most of my work without the amazing posts of those on this website who have ventured into the BWCA and other remote areas, documenting and photographing some of the furthest reaches of our state. I've stuck to only those waterfalls and mills within the borders of our state or straddling the border (i.e.: US and Canadian border).

I'd love to have any feedback folks are willing to offer to edit those locations already noted on the website, add information that may be missing, etc.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

The website is free, the map is able to be used across multiple platforms and even has GPS coordinates at the bottom of each location tagged.

I have the book as well, there are two more books on the subjects. I didn't know they existed before creating the website and since have located more waterfalls than are listed in the books on the subject. I'm not sure of the methodology employed when the authors created the books, but there are several falls not included. I'd assume; and this is a stretch, that the authors have not traveled to some of the waterfalls in the state and therefore have not listed them.

I hope you find the website and map helpful. Please share your thoughts and let me know of any updates that can be made.

Thank you so much for the support. If you find any edits needed, features I've missed (just had one person direct me to a missed thread where I didn't see a waterfall on there I hadn't listed, so the website and the map have been updated), please let me know.

It's been fun doing this project and I will definitely keep on top of it for years to come.

Link to fallsmn.com

Just added a clickable link for those that don't like to cut and paste. :)

Just spent a few minutes on it, but a very nice site! Thanks for all the work, it will be fun to spend some time poking around there.

Thanks so much for doing that. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get the link to hyperlink instead of just cut and paste.

Glad you like the site. If you see updates that need to be made, let me know.

I'm just curious, not trying to be critical at all. What defines a waterfall as a waterfall? Height of drop over distance? I've seen a couple that I would call waterfalls, but aren't listed, i.e. Stuart River into Stuart Lake.

Again, just curious...

No problem at all, it's a good question and one that someone else asked me earlier in another thread (I posted this in another spot before finding the General Discussion section).

There is an actual distinct difference between a waterfall and a rapid. As you've seen I have listed some rapids or what some in the state call cascades, on this website under waterfalls. Over time some may be removed or if it is of benefit to those who frequent these areas, I'll list them in a different section (more than likely what I will do).

Some of the rapids I've listed were found in source material used to create the map and subsequently the website.

Here's a comparison of the two:

Rapids: Forms due to increase in water flow characterized by a river becoming shallower. Four factors, separately or in combination, can create rapids: gradient, constriction, obstruction, and flow rate.

Waterfalls: Forms due to a sudden break in elevation or nick point of a rock due to water flowing over it. Creation of a steep, vertical drop and a plunge pool into which the water of river falls.

With that said I did some digging and found a description pointing me to the approximate location of the falls. I, unfortunately, don't have exact GPS coordinates, nor a photo (yet) that I've been able to source. But your information and the other source I've found is enough for me to add it to the list.

Thanks for the update and addition of this waterfall.

Also, thanks to you I found Dahlgren River Falls and the photograph you posted of it in an older thread along with its description. That's two new falls added to the map and website. Thank you so much.

Very nice website. I have already sent it to a few people that I know will like it.

I may have some additions to the Little Marais River. These falls are on the Lake side of Highway 61 and on private property, Fenstads Resort. I may have some pictures I could send. There is also a small creek, Dragon Creek, on the property that has a 10 - 20 foot falls.

Jay:

Thank you so much for the lead. Any information and help you can provide would be awesome and pictures would be amazing as well.

I'll await your follow-up.

Thank you also for sharing this with others, I've only posted this information on Facebook and the only place I thought appropriate to post it also was on this website as I know others have a passion for waterfalling and exploring the waterways of our beautiful state.

Thanks for the info in one area... Awesome job.

I did some poking around on your site,,, It may be the beer I have drank tonight, but I didn't see anyplace where people can add input.. As example, there are some "unnamed" falls in my AOR that have been "named" by those that happen to be in the water there all the time..

St Louis River Upstream from the Thompson Dam..

Thanks for letting me know. I do have a Contact Us section buried in the About section of the website, it's a hyperlink. I'll look at moving that somewhere else.

If you'd be willing to share with me the link to the section of the site that does have named falls which are listed unnamed, I'd greatly appreciate it and will update the website and the map.

Thank you as well for the support. I didn't realize something like this site and map didn't exist until I started doing some more digging around. Originally the map was created as a little project, just for personal curiosity and all. Then I found out that there wasn't a one-stop-shop for everyone to go to find the information, hence the website being created.

Fantastic, I'm glad you find the website useful. If you have information on falls (updated locations i.e.: GPS coordinates, photos, etc.) to share, let me know.
