I'm a Missouri largemouth fisherman heading north next week. I have some small spinner baits 3/16 and lightweight spinning rods with 6- 8 lb test. I also have bait casters with 20-30 lb test and large assortment of largemouth baits but want to travel Lt. Should I target smallmouth? What are the chances for a rookie to catch northern pike and best bet for and tackle adjustments for other species? steel leaders or titanium 9-12 in

Chances of catching a northern in that area, even for a rookie, very high. There are some trophy sized pike in that area. Caught some very nice pike up there on jointed Rapalas along with countless smallies. Can't go wrong fishing that area. The big thing is get an early start from your entry point because campsites in that area fill up quickly. If nothing else, consider staying on the northern end of Lake Agnes and portage up into the Boulder River and into Boulder Bay. Done that several times and always had luck in that area.

have camped and fished that area a few times. Some real rock star campsites in that area. ( everyone knows about them too)

I've done well in tiger bay, and never fail bay. also done well below the falls that dump into boulder bay from agnes, caught some big ole smallies there.

Can be on Iron lake in about an hour and a half from Boulder bay/Tiger bay.

Leave the bait casters at home and bring the spinning rods with 6/8lb test.

Disagree a little. Bring your bait casters with your 20lb test line, just tie a 3-5 ft flouro leader on. 10-12lb test and your set for pike. I do like rapala baits, but pull some other bass lures while canoeing. Any jerk bait style lure you might have, even a spinner bait will work. Pike will hit almost anything that flashes and splashes. If you want to target smallies and walleye, yes lighter line and spinning rods will do better. I use a bass style bait caster to troll for pike.

Stephmed I am also from missouri and love bass fishing around home. My tactics now for bass are deep due to temps. I have fished up in boulder bay and iron a few times but 2 weeks earlier than your time frame. Make sure you take topwater, smb and pike will not resist. Good luck
