My wife has planned a spiffy little backpacking trip to Isle Royale next week. We will have what looks like an afternoon in Rock Harbor. Here is the question: If we rent a half day motorboat, could we troll around and catch giant pike and then store or ditch or ship our fishing gear somewhere so we don't have to carry it the rest of the trip? Ideas? Is that a decent fishing area?
MT?

thanks, jim

For one family trip Rock Harbor Lodge kept a bag of post-hike clothes for us. There is a small fee and cannot contain food or fuel.

Contacting the Rock Harbor Lodge

Good Luck

I am no expert on the area Lundo so take my advice with a grain of salt. I caught a 5lb laker off the dock several years ago waiting for the ferry. At the end of Rock Harbor is Moskey Basin and I caught a whopper pike there but it took all day casting from the cement dock.

I do not believe you are going to do well on pike in Rock Harbor. There are trout to be had however. Tobin harbor on the other hand may offer some pike fishing opportunities from what I have seen on utube. I did not catch them there but I didn't fish the Tobin much. Way up in it looks good to me for pike as I hiked around it. Pretty sure they rent canoes on Tobin. Nice area to paddle.

I would likely nix the motor boat idea and focus on the hiking or 1/2 day paddle on Tobin.

If you decide to do a canoe trip there some day let me know and you can take me brook trout fishing and I will let you in on a dandy spot or two provided you put your hand on a stack of bibles and are sworn to secrecy etc. etc. ;-)

I don't believe you'll catch pike in lake superior, and IIRC you can't use a motor on any of the inland lakes that would contain pike.

You are right about one thing.......you definitely can't use motors on the inland lakes. Not so sure about not catching pike in Lake Superior however ;-)

Superior pike
