Epoxy would work well. You can buy acrylic paint to match the color. Mix it in with the epoxy and apply. I would highly suggest making a couple mock batches first so you understand how the mixture sets up.
I just repaired a small chip in my gel coat with epoxy and acrylic paint. Works well, the color matches, and it's fairly inexpensive.

You might talk to an expert or two and see what they say...since Ted Bell is still around I'd try to get feedback through Northstar canoes.
I'm guessing that you are talking about vinyl gunnels on a Royalex boat. One thing that you can do to stop a crack from growing more is to take a drill and just drill a hole at the end of the crack where you expect it to grow.

You can use a simple 2 part epoxy from a hardware store to repair the gunwale. Fill the hole and crack then clamp the gunwale squeezing any excess epoxy out. Wipe that clean. Make sure to use gloves. Leave the gunwale clamped over night.

NorthStar answered my question, very nicely, and told me to get MMA at any hardware store or from their website. They don't have MMA specifically on their website. I googled MMA, and nothing comes up, brand-wise. It says MMA is methyl methacrylate, an ingredient in many concoctions. I'm assuming this would be some type of epoxy? I'd like to buy off the NS website, if possible, but need to know the product. THANKS! I'm confused. Does anyone know more about MMA?
PS- I know I could call them back, but really don't want to call twice for this issue!

I am not certain what ingredients are in JB Weld, but I have had great results with it on deep gouges in royalex canoes and to fill in holes in gunwales. I'd be surprised if a gunwale repair would not last the lifetime of the boat?
