Well what do you think?

Does it work?

I have been just a bug net and deet guy in the past and permethrin when walking in tick country.

I swear by my Thermacell. Never found the candles and such to do much if anything.

And deet.

Thermacell here as well.... First mosquito, out it comes... now we have this version that screws on top of a gas cyclinder....so a guy doesn't have to purchase those butane cartridges. It won't work on a windy day but then mosquitoes 'usually' are bad on windy days.

Bye Bye Blackfly, Repel 40%, Thermacell and No See-Um head nets are my standby's. No other "gimmicks".

How big of an area does one work?

They all work. The thing about the sticks and thermacells is that they're vulnerable to breezes. Just a little too much breeze, and they're gone. The sticks are especially ineffective beyond a very short radius. I'm done using DEET for good with very rare exceptions. Everything DEET does, picaradin does better and without the negative effects of DEET like skin toxicity and plastic-melting.

Imagine breeze is a big factor...
we usually put it on the table if them guys want to intrude on our meal....
or between us if we are sitting by the fire etc.
If really bad will start it up in the tent and put by the door for those night time potty stops ( I hate them !!!) so they don't follow us back in....

Pinetree,

They cover a 15 x 15 area. I brought two on my last trip. The old version and the new one mentioned above that screws onto the top of a gas tank.

Thermacell did not work for us. Even on a calm evening and putting right between 2 of us, we were still attacked by the skeeters.
We have had the best luck with a simple, lightweight head net and also Deet on unprotected areas.

That is actually better than I thought.

could you see the element glowing in the sight hole? Maybe the thing never started for you? The blue pad should heat up and gradually turn to white as it is used name...
I can tell when the butane fuel cell runs out...all of a sudden I have visitors

The thermacell has been a miracle at times and at others a bust. It has to be the breeze, but I did not feel one when it didn’t seem to work. I should say the times it didn’t seem to work the skeeters were really bad so maybe the thermacell took the edge off because I will say once we shut them down the bugs were worse... ya know sometimes the only option is to go into the tent :)

Just got back from a 7 day trip this evening, first time we used a Thermacell. Found it to be fairly effective in no wind/calm conditions.

Not my idea but another poster suggested putting it next to the latrine about 15 minutes before everybody starts their morning rituals to clear the mosquitos out. We tried this and it worked pretty well.

there is nothing worst then the cloud of skeeters that await in ambush around the latrine, striking when you have your britches down around your feet and then having to wave your hands wildly around your head

The worst I had was camping on Cairn lake in Quetico, they were horrendous. There was so many you did your duties as fast as you could than you would let 100's in the tent when opening it.

By the door thermocell would of been great. Also as you move slowly outside does it help protect you than?

That looks super interesting. I've never used a bug gadget, but they've always intrigued me.

For the latrine area when the bugs are bad, we bring a real light poncho. You can sit down and mostly you keep the skeeters, flies & whatever off your tush! And in the middle of the night, we ladies don't have to get dressed much either.

I have had some success with Off Mosquito Coils. Small and weigh nothing.
Just put them on a rock or two around area sitting in. At about a $1 a coil can't don't have much too lose.

Just got back. Thermacell is our answer. We use two. Get two. It makes the effect 3X better. My younger daughter is the go-getter of our group and she beats everyone out of the sack at dawn and the first thing I hear is the click-click-click of the device. We try to elevate them just a bit also as I believe the active vapors may be heavier than air.

+1

thermacell works.. this is relative. it works to keep some away, but when its skeeter o clock, no it does not work, or if the bugs want to be jerks, no it does not work. boo bugs! hooray netting down to the no see um
then laugh as the bugs try to get in
i will design a floor for the netting soon so we have total bug free zone, lined with permethrin lol

I've been using the thermacell for years, we now take two when we go... Wife hates skeeters and bugs! One thing we do which is morbidly fun is attach a deer fly patch to the back of her hat and see how many deer flies she catches on a daily outing... I think 17 was the most on one patch!

Bug Bam! Mosquito Grid

Mixed reviews on REI's website, but I've had respectable results hanging these in tent vestibules, under hammock tarps, and at the latrine. They're not going to keep bugs out of your entire camp, but for small areas, they've seemed to work.

I just don't shower all summer. Bugs, bears... I get pretty much left alone. Kinda lonely sometimes... Then I shower slap skeeters a few days and slowly watch man, beast and bugs back away when they see me. But really, I do very little for the bugs out there. Hit the hay for a bit when they really come out in the evening. But then it's all good again. Only a couple times were they or blackflies so bad I had to wear a head net in forty years. Early days had us sporting White Owl cigars. Let's just say better a few bug bites than dropping the TP bag while on the pot and reaching down to get it forgetting the white owl in your mouth and it comes down on your leg. Amazing how fast a guy can sit up again.
