I have a non-BWCA trip question for the members here. I am going to stay in Grand Marais for a week in later August for some day hikes and then a 3-day backpacking trip on the SHT. I was wondering if anyone could give me any info on any non-hiking sights to see along the north shore. I know there are a couple lighthouses to check out, but never having been to that area, I wasn't sure of other things that are worth seeing.
Thanks for any information that can be provided.

The river calmly flows, Through shining banks, through lonely glen, Where the owl shrieks, though ne'er the cheer of men Has stirred its mute repose, Still if you should walk there, you would go there again.

I was up there around the 4th this year camping at cascade state park. Its only about 10 min before your get to grand marais. Its a great park to checkout if you have time. We also went to the black sand beach around silver bay. Had been meaning to go there for years and its a cool beach with black sand just like it says and a nice picnic area if you want to spend some time there. If you like fish try the fish market thats next to the angry trout in grand marais, you can get fresh catch of the day there.

Grand Marais is full of artsy stores and good restaurants. If you are a fine art fan you need to mill about in Severtson Gallery. Superior Trading post is great and full of hiking/canoeing stuff as well as home decor.
Skip Sven & Ole's pizza. Hughie's Taco House is the place to go! Gunflint Tavern is good, Voyageur Brewing is the place for beer, and Angry Trout Cafe is fantastic (though spendy).
Just chilling out on Artists' Point is great. Good place to have a picnic lunch. I am not sure if they have day classes, but check out the North House Folk School.
South of Grand Marais is Cascade River SP (20-min drive), Temperance River SP (30-min drive and worth hiking around), and Tettegouch SP (60-min drive Shovel Point and Palisade Head).
North of Grand Marais in Judge Magney SP is Devils Kettle (20-min drive)

What is your means of travel? If you are driving...
It's not exactly north shore but Canal Park in Duluth deserves honorable mention.
Also if you are traveling up I 35 the Hinkley Fire Museum is a good place for a stretch break.
I do like hiking in Tettegouche SP

The correct kind of marketing does wonders. A couple of years ago when I told my mother I visited Black Beach, she asked me if I thought it was safe. I do. The beach is actually the eastern edge of the tailings delta created in the 1960s and 70s.

Brando: "I know I can’t drive past Gills smokehouse without stopping in!"
Gill's is permanently closed (according to Google Maps), but I can recommend Russ Kendall's Smokehouse on old 61 (Scenic Drive). The smoked whitefish is outstanding!
"Said one of these men, long past seventy years of age: 'I could carry, paddle, walk and sing with any man I ever saw. I have been twenty-four years a canoe man, and forty-one years in service; no portage was ever too long for me. Fifty songs could I sing. I have saved the lives of ten voyageurs. Have had twelve wives and six running dogs. I spent all my money in pleasure. Were I young again, I should spend my life the same way over. There is no life so happy as a voyageur's life!'"
