I've seen a couple of body shells on the sidewalk, but haven't heard the usual chirping.

Ohio brood hatched about 2 years ago. I took my kids camping and had not told them prior to going what we were getting into (although i knew). Was a memorable time for all!!!

There are annual cicadas that come out every year.
The 13 and 17 year cicada are the ones that cause the surge in populations.

As jcavanagh points out, there are annual cicadas that appear every summer. These have a green and black color pattern.

The periodical cicada are mostly black with orange eyes. There are 15 distinct broods that appear in different years, depending on where you live. The linked article has a map of the different broods, and the emergence years.

I think I photographed these, in our Chicago suburb, in 2006.
