So, I'm bringing my Garmin 73sv first week of September. Going to crooked from mudro. Fishfinder mounts.com has some really nice setups specific for canoes and kayaks.
Big huge magnets for a portable really good read transducer mount.
I wish I could show you a picture of mine. Awesome. Small business company. Check it out.

How are you going to power that unit? That's a pretty big, color screen that will eat a lot of juice.

Nocqua lithium battery runs mine for 12-15hours.

I'm not planning on keeping it on all day, two batteries will last me 9days no problem.
But, for those who do, there's always the Sherpa 100. With solar panels.

I'm liking the looks of that magnetic transducer mount. How hard is it to remove or reposition in practical use?

Any concerns about wear on Kevlar/finish? ...and now that I've typed the question, I am thinking that it would be a simple matter of hitting any wear spots when you do any other refinishing. Add to that, the magnets moving and rubbing would surely inflict much less damage that even the kindest and gentlest of BWCA granite.

Magnets don't move.
Awesome set up, which is why I'm sharing.
You can move it where you want when the magnet isn't locked to the other magnet.

I've used magnets for this and found them to be OK. I prefer a suction cup. I put tape on the outside magnet and make sure you tie off the inside magnet.

Plumbers putty is where it's at boys. Slap a glob on the inside of the canoe, then push your transducer into the putty. Instant through hull readings. No wires hanging out of the canoe to get snagged by paddles or rapalas.

FatLunker: "You can move it where you want when the magnet isn't locked to the other magnet."

I guess that's the root of my question. How do the magnets "lock" together, and how hard is it to pull them apart? I've got some magnet mounts in my woodshop that have a switch to "turn them off", and others that use rare earth magnets that would be a bear to pull apart if there were eight pairs of magnets.

But you get no water temp reading (right?) if that's important to you, and you know...glob of plumber's putty in your canoe. I do like the idea of less to snag on or hit with a paddle, though.

If temp is a big deal, just grab the ducer out of the putty, set in the water, get your temp and then place back in putty. 10 seconds, done.

I have one of the magnetic mounts for my kayak and it kicks butt. The only downsides are it's weight and the cost (and maybe the possibility of exploding your finger tip if you happen to get it between the two magnets). After seeing it online, I had toyed with the idea of making my own version with a gun magnet, but ultimately decided to buy the real thing. It's extremely easy to set up and remove, doesn't come loose, and packs really small. Makes a pretty slick setup in my opinion.

Well, sir, I have no need to retort simple solutions and common sense. I'm still intrigued by the magnet mount and great reviews, but I may have to give the putty a try on my next outing to see how my unit does with it. Quick, easy, cheap, and no risk in trying. Losing the drag created by my current transducer rig would be no small deal, either.
