It has been 9 years so....take this with a HUGE grain of salt. But from memory it is in this area:

look for a cairn.

You might have to do a little searching but there has been a map posted on this web site of the portage.

It's canoerone again - I looked thru my boxes of canoe related info and found my copy of the trail map that I mentioned above. I apologize for my previous note, the map was not on this (BWCA.com) web site. You can download the map on the following web site:

I hope this helps you have a great trip.

Drnatus has it correct or at least in the general area. I remember being on the south campsite looking over the water and it was to my left across the lake. There was a little cove there. It was about 4 years ago when I was there in late September and it was still easy to find because all of the grass was matted down where people pulled up and got out. You shouldn't have too much trouble.

That tom pinkerton map is perfect, thanks guys doing my first solo up that way on September 5th, and thinking about cutting through Fat.

I just did this portage a week ago. The Portage is in that North East Pocket before Slim chokes and south of the campsite on the western shore. When I was there there was a downed tree right in front of it.

The portage has a few spots that might make you question the route. Take your time, it's kind of a bear, especially with canoes. I suspect it is 200+ Rods. GL!

Is fat worth the trip in?

For Laker fishing....yes. Nothing real big but plenty of action....depending on the time of year. Pretty little lake. One of the brothers at CCO told me that if he could have a cabin on any lake in the BW, it would be on Fat.

I camped on Fat last summer. Gorgeous site up on a ledge. I caught a laker within 15 minutes when I started. I believe Fat is a “heritage lake”, meaning it is not stocked because it is one of only 35 Laker lakes in the state that reproduce naturally. The “heritage lakes” of Minnesota have the most genetically pure Lake trout...I read that on the DNR website.

“”On the 35 known native lake trout lakes, called Heritage Lakes, the DNR does not stock lake trout so that the genetic purity of the unique existing strains remains untainted.””
