Has anybody recently returned from BWCA/Quetico? How are the flies? Mosquitos?

I had very few of each last week at the N.E. side. They’re there, but not many.

Just got back on 8/22 there were a few mosquitoes (tolerable with bug spray, nothing like in spring), and very few flies.

Mosquitos are still thriving on Kawnipi, and will be even happier after the rains. They should taper off soon though.

Be prepared for the ankle biters.

Just got back from a week into and out of EP16, up to Ge-Be and back, staying on Oyster a few days, the mosquitoes were murder, even with Deet. But its part of the deal!

We were in Sea Gull / Sag area about 10 days ago and the mosquitos were around at the usual time in the evening, disappeared about an hour later as temps dropped into the 50s. Ankle biters were an annoyance in the boat but a real issue on Englishman Island. We intentionally moved on the next day because of the biting flies that welcomed us to the campsite, plus the bald faced wasps that just would not stop getting in our faces.

As in kids? or is there some bug that's referred to as ankle biters?

The flies that look like regular house flies that fly around the bottom of the canoe and bite your ankles. They will really bite just about any other body part that is available too. Things are super annoying and usually are around from the last week of June until early September.

Thanks everybody for all your info. Seems like the rain and mosquitoes go together. Cold and windy is a trade off for fewer mosquitoes.
