I'll be leaving home in a couple of weeks and heading north. If all goes according to plan, I should be in Duluth in time for dinner at Duluth Grill on Sept. 11th. if anyone is around to join me.

Could possibly do breakfast the next morning there.

Will be in Grand Marais for dinner the 12th. Also on Sept. 30th and Oct. 1st if those work for anyone.

I’ll be available both the 11th and 12th. How late will you be staying in Duluth the morning of the 12th? I really want to try the OMC Smokehouse , but they don’t open until 11AM.

08/27/2018 08:46AM

I could meet you on the 11th for dinner, and somewhere on the North Shore for lunch on the 12th then. (Or even for lunch and then dinner in Grand Marais.) I would rather not drive back down to Duluth for breakfast if meeting on 11th.

08/27/2018 09:26AM
I should be able to make the Duluth meet up.
Looking forward to meeting you boonie.

Inspector, if you are able to make the 11th at Duluth Grill, I'd love to meet you also.

Hey Boonie,

what EP are you going in at? My buddy and I are arriving In GM the evening of the 15th and hitting the Missing Link Lake EP the 16th.....probably work our way down to Cherokee, maybe spend a night on Frost and out the following Friday.....didn't know if we might cross paths.

Mike

08/27/2018 08:22PM
Mike,

I'm entering EP #50, Cross Bay, 2 days before you on the 13th. Heading south, then west, but depends on water levels, etc. It's possible we might cross paths on Frost, but probably miss by a day or two.

Which way do you plan to go to Frost/Cherokee from Missing Link - through Snipe?

I've been in and out of Missing Link a couple of times. In fact, this trip may exit there - it's maybe a mile to Cross Bay.

I'll be in a NorthStar rental from Sawtooth. I may be wearing a BWCA.COM hat.

Have a good trip!

We are spending Sunday on missing link trout fishing then cutting thru snipe to cross bay and maybe as far as Cherokee on Monday. We’ll probably spend two days onCherokee and then a night on Frost and then maybe head back up to Cross bay for some walleye and then exit at ep50 on Friday. Nothing is set in stone though.....this will be a pretty laid back trip for us. You mentioned “depending on water levels”, Are you doing the Frost River? I’ll be in a red Northstar Phoenix with a flying moose sticker and my buddy will be in a white wenonah solitude...

Mike

08/27/2018 08:56PM
Yes, doing the Frost River unless it's too low or I'm just not feeling up to it. I'll be solo with lots of time and lots of options, so we'll see . . .

I'd love to join you at the Duluth Grill on the 11th. It would be a great to share my second to last dinner with paddling friends before going to get a(nother) new knee. It's amazing to me that I actually have met all who have responded positively so far. And I know that you aren't all named Steve....

08/28/2018 08:36AM
That's great, Ginny. Maybe we'll take a picture and call it "the next to the last supper" :). We may not all be called Steve, but some of us have been called many things and answered to some of them. ;) Looking forward to seeing you, even if it's not the new you.

08/28/2018 09:22AM
Hey! Sounds like a great idea! Thanks for the heads up, Steve! I think I can make this work out if the evening of the 11th works out for y'all.

08/28/2018 10:33AM
That's the evening I'll be there; I hope you can make it again, Karen.

My real name is Steve... Haha... Kidding...

I think Sunday is the 9th... We serve breakfast that day for the community. Our board meeting is put off until the 13th, it normally would be on that Tuesday. Lots going on in our community right now...

boonie, i'll be at east bearskin lake campground, arriving sept 29th, sat. for the week.
site 17. looks like you are in the area. wanted to give you a heads up. solo

09/06/2018 07:00AM
solo-

My entry is EP #50, Cross Bay, and I'm exiting on the 30th, hopefully by "noonish" as I have to return a canoe to Sawtooth before checking into Nelson's in Grand Marais for a much needed "cleaning up". I'll be staying there the 30th and 1st before heading home. I'll be doing some laundry and trying to dry things out before the long drive home, but hoping to connect with others for dinner.

If I get out early enough the 30th, I may drive into the campground and see if you're there, but don't just sit around waiting . . . I'm planning to have dinner somewhere in Grand Marais that evening if that works for you. I don't usually have much cell service once I get beyond Pincushion heading out of GM on the Gunflint, but will email you my cell number. I should be pretty easy to spot though - probably the only red Subaru Outback with WV license plates :). I'll be staying at Nelson's (in #6) on the left heading SW out of GM, a little ways past Dockside.

I'll be available for dinner the 1st also. I was thinking of trying the Poplar Haus Restaurant some people here had mentioned positively, but they are closed that day.

Would it be a good idea for the first of the bwca.com Steves or even non-Steve's to arrive at the Duluth Grill to ask for a table for six (if I've counted right)? I've counted Boonie-Steve, Ben-nonSteve, Inspector13-Steve, LT3-nonSteve, Hawbaker-nonSteve, and me nonSteve. Because I live in Duluth, I could easily be there at 6 and get our name on the list if I'm get there before anyone else. Just like campsites in a popular lake, tables often fill fast. Looking forward to seeing all and hearing about paddling trips past and planned and other stuff.

We could bring a pack and leave it at one table while we search for a better table. Or go one step further and set up a tent on the table. Haha.

Ben,

Its not showing off, it is all in the hat.

I'm all hat no canoes/cattle.
Well i'm not totally short of canoes, the wife and I are up to about 7 now.
Look for me in the corner table wearing this.
And before you reply, I know I look like a dog, but at least I don't smell like one.

Linden, I'll look for that nose and the hat too of course.
BTW, did you get the email I sent about 3 wks ago about my Camp Trails pack?

See you tonight at the Duluth Grill.

No, I didn't get the email.
It was when I was fighting fires in Wyoming so maybe I missed it.
I'll probably come a little after 5:30 and get a table.

LT3, are you still interested in CT "monster" pack? I'll throw it in my car now no problem and if you want to check it out fine. Fine if you aren't interested either. I'll probably be there before 6 too. I get mighty hungry at that time of afternoon. Feeding Addie just after 4 gets me to thinking food for myself.

Yes, I am still interested in your pack, and I will have my canoe in the car so I can see if it works.

Mike

10/05/2018 08:07PM
Mike,

I survived 17 days of mostly wet, cold, and windy . . . with plantar fasciitis. So I had strip, but it wasn't exactly what I planned. I reached Frost on the 2nd day barely able to walk and stayed at the center site for a few days, then headed down to Cherokee for a few days before heading back towards my exit. I thought perhaps I'd see you on Frost/Cherokee. I did have a few interesting experiences, but it was long and the weather got old with the plantar fasciitis.

I hope you had a good one.

We had a great trip! Unfortunately, I wrenched my surgically re-built knee on the wet/muddy portage from Snipe-Missing Link on Monday, the day we were headed down to Cherokee. We wound up stopping on Rib at the sole campsite for lunch and my knee swelled up. We decided to go ahead and spend the night there'd see how my knee did. Rib turned out to be a really good fishing lake so we wound up staying thru Tuesday. Tuesday night we listened to the weather forecast and Thursday/Friday sounded pretty poor so we elected to day trip to Long Island on Wednesday and fish for Lakers and then returned to Rib that evening. It turned out to be a good call as Thursday was pretty wet and then the winds came in Thursday night/Friday. we weren't sure we were going to be able to get out Friday, but around noon the gusts dropped a bit and we were back at Tuscarora's late afternoon. The highlight of the trip had to be coming off the portage from ML to Snipe and as we came out of the little bay from the portage, immediately to our left on the shore was a huge Bull moose! His antlers were still bright white and he had a long scraggly beard. We just sat and looked at each other for awhile and my buddy got some photos and then we paddled on. Do you drive a Burgundy Outback?

Mike

10/07/2018 10:59AM
Well, my trip didn't go exactly as planned either, Mike ;). Yes, I do drive a burgundy Outback (2016) with WV license plate. It was parked there at Cross Bay while I was in if you went by there.

I also stayed at Rib on my entry day due to the wind, then went to Frost the next day, where I stayed several days trying to rest the plantar fasciitis. Then I went down to Cherokee for several days, before slowly working my way back out the way I came.

Hope the knee is better.
