I have noticed on the DNR page if you look up the maps for Alton Lake it says there is a old logging camp in the SE corner of the lake. I tried to find a trail leading back that way with no luck. Only found the portage to Wonder Lake...

Has anyone seen this old logging camp?

Contact Bill Hansen at Sawbill Outfitters for info on the logging operation south end of Alton / Wonder . I think this was much later logging operation in 1940s when truck logging took over the Superior National Forest

I haven’t looked for that one specifically, but I have looked for old cabins or resorts. The forest reclaims the land quickly. I don’t think you will find a trail. Usually you have to walk around quite a bit if there is an old foundation then you can spread your search around and might find an old dump or tiling. It is weird how your eyes and brain work, you can walk the same area and see nothing but then you find a clue and all of a sudden you start to see a pattern and you start seeing signs of the past.

Then again sometimes I get burned and find nothing;)

I have looked at my USGS topo maps before and noticed a cleared area on the south side of the lake. This was the logging camp I was thinking, because you could see the cleared lines they made for the camp.

I am very familiar with the area and have no knowledge of the camp. Thats not to say it didn't exist. There are a few old logging dams in the area like on Kelso, Alton and Sawbill.

I also checked some old maps of the area on saw no camp on the south end of Alton. Some of the maps are almost 100 years old.
