Visiting Dorothy on Knife Lake!

Visited the museum over the weekend and found my signature. I knew the year and was within two weeks on the date so it took me about five minutes to find my signature.

It brought back a lot of memories.

Very cool to find your name in those log books. I was never there when she was living, but I did visit her islands a few years ago and walked around. During my visit there, I found both of my good friends' names and my old neighbor's names in those books. I’ll bet that root beer tasted great.

That's neat. When we visited the museum they didn't have the log books out, so we couldn't look up our names. I know we were there in June of 1974, so am sure we could find our names in the book. Clearly remember signing the book after we drank our root beers. Wish I had taken more photos.

We need to go back to the museum again sometime.

Yes, it is! I certainly wish I'd have known about Dorothy and Pine Island when we paddled through Knife!

The last time I was there you just needed to ask to see the books. They will gladly let you see them. They are not out in the open when I was there. They were tucked away in a display case up front.

So a friend and I were there in 78 and our dad's we're best friends that did a trip in 51 I think. We found there names and what they bought. It would be fun to show my kids...

Very cool indeed.

I have frequented the museum several times and the staff is always helpful. This past June, I was there with some scouts and a couple of dads. One of the dads found his father's entry from way back. I think it meant a lot to him to find his dad's entry. Our visit to the museum was with purpose because the scouts wanted to paddled to knife lake and check out Dorothy's island. The museum tour was a great opportunity for them to learn about the trip they were about to take...and how resilient Dorothy was. As luck would have it, we camped on the sight straight across to the south of Dorothy's place. I paddled with my son to check out the ribbon rock. The pix is of us on our way back with Pine island in the back ground. Good memory for us...even if no guest book to sign.

The one time I stopped by her place was on my 20th BD in 1981. I don't remember if I signed any guestbook, but I did drink some root beer. Dorothy was fairly shy, as I recall.

We did ask. But at the time we were there, quite a few years ago, they told us that they didn't have the books "ready to be seen by visitors."

It was very special to share the experience with my wife and daughter.

My wife was on a trip to see Dorothy but a storm prevented the stop so she never got the chance.

The books are now all copied and in binders on display in the gift shop. The originals are in storage because pages started to go missing. Just as the sign designating the island and saying feel free to visit and pay your respects but no camping. I am always amazed that people can be so selfish and take something for themselves that belongs to "history".

I signed the books numerous times ( 10 or so) but I did only look for the first time I signed the book.
