Lots and lots and lots of options out of Ely. With a bit more info on what else you're looking for, we might be able to give some better advice.

I think *all* of the entry points out of Ely can work for a short solo. From Trout Lake into Pine on the west side to Snowbank into Disappointment on the east, you can't really go wrong.

Mudro to fourtown and base camp or go up to gun and moose camp and come down the river.

I might consider a little river trip. The wind can be unpredictable in October on big water. Little Indian souix is a bit up the road but, nice lazy river. Minimal portaging. Plus, if we get an extra cold shot; less worry about water getting hard if it drops into the twenty's. Good luck.

Stay away from numbered lakes... There is an active bear there. Who knows when he'll take his long winters nap.

Slim Lake entry is a nice entry if you don't mind a shorter paddle. Entry point is a weird place as you have to off road it up a dirt trail to the place. Beautiful area but once you get in you will like it.

Another option could be Slim Lake. There is a great site on Hook Lake. Maybe a little more limiting for day trips but you'd still have options and most likely wouldn't see anyone else past Slim.

Thanks Tony. This looks like a nice option.
