Over the past 5 years I've had a number of tent fly issues. I'm religious about storing gear dry, so I ascribe the multiple fly issues to good use and bad luck.
In all cases the warranty had expired so it was up to the manufacturer to decide what to do. I want to give kudos to those companies that replaced or repaired the fly with no questions asked. The North Face - a 20 year Expedition 25 - replaced with no questions asked! Black Diamond - Mesa - replaced Sierra Designs - Meteor Light - replaced Mountain Hardware - Trango - replaced
I had one other tent with issues - that one was almost unused and effectively new, though purchased 6 years previously. The only option offered was to sell me a fly at a discount. It wasn't an unfair way to handle it, just not generous. Please don't speculate about which mfgr this one is, just know that those I've named deserve recognition.
I want to go back and commend North Face again - that was beyond generous.
To be fair to the other company. When you get a tent from "bear" they were probably thinking our warranty does not cover damage by bear... Haha. Been amazed at how well manufacturers cover their products in this industry.
Mountain Hardwear has repaired my well used Casa 6 four times now. This tent is 13 year old and has been used heavily. 2 times they fixed/replaced a zipper and 2 times they have repaired broken poles. They did all of the repairs for free under warranty.
REI once replaced my tent for free because (a) I set it up in a depression and it flooded and (b) I left my poles in the woods when I packed up in the dark next to a tree buzzing with hornets. They just pitied me, I guess. I didn't even ask them to replace the tent; I just wanted to buy a new set of poles.
Good to know, but I see no reason to withhold the 4th maker. Seems they did right by you, just maybe not as good as others. Nothing wrong with knowing where a person stands on warranty issues. I could see it helping people narrow down a tent if it came down to a toss up, knowing how one mfg addresses warranty issue over another might be a pretty critical factor in the decision making process. I've seen the discount fly approach with both Big Agnes and Nemo, not sure if it was one of those two but I'd have no issue buying from either knowing thats what they have done. I don't think naming them is slanderous at all.
