When we went into Quetico via Zup's in late May it was in the middle of a heat wave, 90's, and the Loon River was too low to navigate, so we had to take the Dawson Portage in an old Suburban. Our driver Jan Matson characterized the "portage", accurately, as a bad Canadian bush road. About half way after a particularly rough stretch I thought I heard wolves howling--Jan informed me it was the wheel bearings. It was a long, rough haul and we had to unload all our gear from the boat from Crane Lake into the Suburban and unload and reload into a second boat on the other side of the portage. For better or worse, after a week of rain we were able to exit via the Loon River.

Everyone should experience that Dawson Portage just once. They used to use an OLD school bus with manual transmission. The driver would have his 6 pack of Budweiser and by the time we were at the end the 6 pack was empty.
As rough as that road was/is at the end of our trips we would fall asleep on that bus ride. Sometimes we would play eucher.
I believe the story goes that that bus went for a swim once when the breaks failed. It was pulled out drained and they started using it again.
Ahh, good memories...

Springer2: "A friend loaned me this to scan--she says ""My Grandfather used to take my mom and dad up to Zup’s fishing when they were newlyweds, so late 1940’s/early '50's. They would take a small plane in." The brochure, produced by
Fisher Maps, is dated 1952.
"
I would LOVE to have a copy of that.

I used to go to Zups cabin camp with my Dad back in the 70's and early 80's. We rode on that bus many times with the driver and his beer. That bus ride was always a memorable part of the trip.
