Thinking about a day trip to Ely this weekend... are there any vistas, valleys, high points, etc.- that are accessible (either by canoe or by car) to view the Fall colors? I only have one day and don't need a marathon. Was planning on doing a quick day paddle to the North Hegmen pictos.

The falls is a great idea. One late trip we actually had our best leaf viewing on the road from Ely to Virginia. It rolls enough that there are some good long views. And the leaves had turned colors while the ones near the lakes had barely started.

There is a view over Soudan and the surrounding forest at the Underground Mine State Park. Really...

Might want to check out Jasper Peak and the fire tower. It is located just east of Soudan on the south side of the road. The new road to Ely from Soudan has some nice views towards Vermilion.

There's an overlook on the Fernberg towards Lake 1, Rookie Pond I think? Also the road out to Moose Lake has some nice views.

Not really avista, but the view of Ed Shave lake off the Echo trail seemed cool to me.

Fall colors seem to be running a little late this year. I’d enter Mudro, portage into Sandpit and then portage to Range Lake. Or just walk the portage. I’ve found great colors in past years in this area.

The Echo Trail road up northwest is very pretty right now. And you could take a medium time day trip up Little Indian Sioux which should be gorgeous with color and maybe take a few minutes to go see Devil's Cascade waterfall.
