It's probably been discussed on here before, but I am looking to get a 10x12' tarp from Dan that I plan on using not only on BWCA trips, but also car camping and when I go backpacking on rainy weekend loops (may even ditch my tent and just use the tarp on these trips?) Is there a major weight difference between the 1.1oz tarps and the 1.9 oz tarps?? And how do you set these up over a fire pit without melting holes in the tarp?
You can set it up over the fire but as said it is key to keep the fire low. I suggest the 1.1 if you are gonna also use for backpacking. There is about a pound of difference between the fabrics.
We normally set the tarp up away from the fire and use it as a hang out/keep gear dry. Depending on how hard its raining, this is when we cook with the stove vs over the fire.
If you want to use a tarp over the fire, I would get a cheaper tarp to use first. You can test out what works and what doesnt and then use the CCS after your trial and error.
I would say get a bigger tarp as well. I have the 1.1 oz size 16' by 10'. Initially I was gonna get a smaller one, but was talked into buying a bigger one. Glad I did. It only weighs 4 ounces more than 10 by 12. I have found 4 ppl get fit comfortably under the 16 by 10.
