I'm planning a trip to the BWCA for the trout opening this winter, over New Years weekend, and wanted to see if anyone was interested in joining. I have experience winter camping and ice fishing but zero experience targeting Lake Trout through the ice so it would be great to have company of someone who has experience with that but not a necessity.

I have a 3 person Snowtrekker tent and stove I'm willing to share with 1 or 2 people. I'm thinking either Duncan or Daniels lake from December 29th - Jan 1st but am open to suggestions.

If I can't find any company for the trip I'll still go by myself. It's just nice to have help hauling in gear, helping with camp chores and meeting new people.

A little about myself: I'm a 33 year old male, moved to the twin cities area about 2 years ago, married (7 years) and enjoy sports (Wisconsin teams) and the outdoors.

If you are interested in joining either sharing a tent or with your own let me know.

Going to be tough to find a companion for you being a Wisconsin sports fan. :)

I prefer to fish them thru the ice. I suggest starting with a white tube jig. Work it aggressively from the bottom to the top of the water column. Making sure to give it plenty of time to “flutter” down in between rips. Also have had success with flutter spoons.

Obviously, a flasher helps. They can definitely be caught without them though.

Get out and give your shoulder a workout. Wildest ride on ice if you hook into a nice 1.

Here is my PB. Caught not far from where you are describing. The papers believed I caught it in Aitkin County :)

Impressive catch and thank you for the tips. What depth do you typically fish at?

Thinking.

A little about myself: I'm a 62 year old male, moved to the UP about 10 years ago, married (35 years) and enjoy sports (Wisconsin teams) and the outdoors. Winter camped on Duncan January 2016 and Tuscarora March 2015. I am a rookie lake trout ice-fisherman, but caught 2 on Tuscarora. I got into winter camping in 2013 and have about 24 trips to my record, mostly to go ice fishing.

I have two potential partners who are still working. Thanks for the idea.

I would be interested in the trip! I am originally from Minnesota, but have lived in Wisconsin for thirty years now. I have a few laker ice fishing trips under my belt and have caught a few. I have wanted to try winter camping for a while now and this sounds like a great way to try it out.

What model of snow trekker do you have? I was just looking at them the other day.

I just purchased a Snowtrekker EXP Shortwall 9'x11.5'. This will be it's maiden trip. It arrived last week and I was so excited I set it up in my living room. I need to pickup an elbow piece for the stove and will do a test setup outside to make sure everything goes together smoothly this weekend.

Prior to that I used a Atuk Kanguk 9'x9' which is a nice lightweight and cheaper tent but I wanted something a little bigger, easier to stand up and get in and out of.

That is a lot of trips in a short time. Congrats on being able to get out that often. I'm not as experienced in winter camping with 6 trips under my belt.

I'll send you both an email later today so we can talk about the trip a little more and see if we can put a plan together.

I like structure in close proximity to the deepest part of the lake. The actual depth I target varies greatly in the winter time. They can really be anywhere in the water column. Even right below the ice.

Ideally, I like to set a string of holes on a break. Start hole hopping and hope to get some action in 1 of them. If I get 1, Punch more holes at that depth nearby. Hoping to be on top of something they are using to their advantage for hunting.

If you have a flasher, familiarize yourself with recognizing schools of bait fish. This can help immensely when you’re drilling holes and searching. I tend to be a little more patient in a spot if I’m marking schools of Cisco moving through.

Just what has worked for me.

I’m totally addicted to it.

Yeah I've alway wanted to do what you are talking about. I've ice fished many times but not for lakers in the BW. You had me all worked up until you admitted your a cheesehead;). But I'm gonna mull it over, talk to the mrs and consult a therapist to see if I can find a way to make it work. I am glad you admitted your major character defect up front though, it might have gone horribly wrong had you sprung that fact while we were isolated with no witnesses around. LOL
