Some years back a bwca.com member sent me an email regarding locating and hunting moose in the bwca. He took my advice and got a moose. I don’t think he shared his story on here so I am attaching the email he sent me. It’s quite the story. I have deleted the location for the moose’s sake.

John,
sorry for the delay in getting my moose hunt report to you, i've had grand ideas of writing the whole story up for bwca.com but haven't gotten it done yet. I did end up getting a moose along the @@@@ near @@@@. I did the hunt alone so as you can imagine it was quite a bit of work to get the animal out to the mudro entry point. It took seven trips on every portage so I walked every trail 13 times (comes out to be 30 some odd miles). I portaged and paddled in the dark by headlamp to make sure I got the meat out in good condition and I arrived at my truck at 10:30 at p.m. on the 5th day of season 39 hours after shooting it. It was a life changing experience. I learned a little about hunting and a lot about being a man and it had nothing to do with shooting a moose or carrying meat across portages but instead about being a good husband and father. I got to enjoy the beauty of the Beartrap River in complete solitude which I thoroughly enjoyed, thanks for suggesting it. Your assistance and insights gave me the ability to hunt the area with confidence, so I thank you for that. The bull turned out to be 59.5" wide which is quite big for MN so that was great but the size of the rack paled in comparison to the experience. The meat is delicious.
Take Care,

I should mention this was fairly deep in a pma, some of the portages are tough with just lightweight gear.

Great story. Several years ago I encountered 3 hunters in the BW packing out a moose. Quite a bit of work for the 3 of them, much less one guy. And they weren't that deep.

Every Maine moose hint story I've ever heard involved driving around on logging roads until they found a moose close enough to the road to get a cable from the winch on it... and they still talk for for an hour about how difficult it was to get the moose in the truck. This guy's story has them all beat hands down.

Great story and I love hunting stories that have REAL outdoor experiences, instead of many hunts of today. Good going.

John,
I don't get on the site very often but I saw your reference to my moose hunt, great memories. I did post the story on the website and I'm pretty sure it was titled "My Moose Hunt" and I remember it received many nice comments but for the life of me I can't find the post anymore. Kind of bummed because I was interested to read it again myself after all these years. (Fall of 2011). If anyone can find it or knows how I can search my old posts let me know.
Take care,
Shane
