Food for the Sole review. A new one to me, but I'll probably try some. It may be of interest to some other folks.

I saw the review too and it looks interesting, particularly some of the no-cook salads. If you try, please share your experience.

I would like to try the Miso Broccoli and the Sweet Potato and Kale. I'mn not a vegetarian, but find on longer trips that I start to crave vegetables, so am always interested in new dehydrated "vegi-meals". I really should eat down some of what I have on the shelf now before buying more though.

Like you, HappyHuskies, I'm interested in the cold veggie salad part. I also like the serving size of 600 +/- calories. I'm also always on the lookout for gluten free alternatives since my sister has celiac disease and I'm still trying to talk her into a trip. They are a little high in sodium for my taste, but one or two on a trip would be OK. I think the taster pack of all 7 in a 250 calorie size for $28 would be a good way to sample them all. I may order that, but should also probably eat down my supply a little.

Thanks for the heads-up on the sampler. Some how I'd overlooked that. Seems like a good way to try everything and the lighter calorie count will be good for a lunch or a dinner paired with rice. Shipping is a little stiff, but the meals are intriguing enough to get me to give it a try. Will be worth it if they provide a light, easy and tasty veggie alternative.

I do the same. I realized that it's fresh food I crave, not necessarily vegetables in general. I usually hit the salad bar at the steak house pretty hard the first night out of the wilderness, and eat a lot of fresh fruit the first few days out.

That thai Peanut slaw sounds pretty great. I'd eat that right now. I usually don't care for American cole slaw (unless it comes with a pulled pork sammich) but I almost always like Asian slaws. I was thinking as I read it that that would be great with some ramen, then there it was at the end!

I received the sampler pack some time ago and sampled two tonight while my wife is out with the "girls".

The Coconut Rice and Cuban Black Beans was very good - as tasty as any of these sorts of meals I have eaten. You can't go wrong with this one - it was very good eaten at home :).

I also tried the Zesty Miso Broccoli Salad. It was pretty good, but not quite as good as the first. It was one of the cold-prep meals.

I'd eat either one of these again as an occasional meal for variety, although they are too high in sodium for me to eat on a regular basis.

I'll update when I try the others.

I just can't get my head wrapped around the fad of going stoveless.
Maybe you can't teach old dogs new tricks

Darn you Boonie :) Now you've pushed me over the edge. Just placed an order for the sampler myself. I don't really need any more dehydrated meals right now, but adding some good no cook meals was just too tempting to pass up. Yes, I know there are some hot meals included in the sampler too, but it's the cold options that I'm currently most interested in. Still, will be good to try all of them.

Thanks for posting your thoughts. I'm looking forward to trying something new!

Hammer- I think I'm going to have to learn to just eat my coffee cold! :)

HappyHuskies- I only tried the one cold-prep salad, but am looking forward to trying the other one. They may be what you are looking for.

The Coconut Rice and Cuban Black Beans has me looking for a similar recipe to cook at home.

I hope so. In any case knowing that you found at least the one reasonably palatable was enough to get me to take the leap. Not sure when I'll try them though. If there continues to be just a few inches of snow along the Kek, I may try one last backpacking trip after Thanksgiving before giving up and waiting for safe ice on the lakes.

In any case, always nice to see another food option that seems to be trying to be different than other offering. Thanks for sharing your experience.

HappyHuskies-

They are having 20% off sale, I think through Monday. I also noticed they have a couple of variety pack bundles - 3meals, 2 hot, 1 cold - that save some money and are also 20% off that.

I also checked out Outdoor Herbivore and they have several new meals that are cold prep/salad types that may be of interest to you.

Boonie,

Thanks ... I had noticed the sale at Food for the Sole and did place an order for one of their bundles.

I had not seen the new no cook stuff at the Outdoor Herbivore, though, so will have to check that out. I have not purchased anything from them for awhile, so it is probably time to restock for next season. Some new cold prep salad things to try sounds good and I could definitely use a few more on the shelf. Thanks for the heads-up!

Update:

The Garlic Green Bean and Cashew Stir Fry and the Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Kale and Quinoa were both quite tasty, with the former a tad better, but I'd eat all 4 I've sampled again.

Thanks for continuing to share your thought on these new meals. I placed an order last year for a few of their offerings, but don't use much dehydrated food in the winter. Both sound worth trying.

With the snow disappearing fast I hope to get out for a hike in the BW before ice out and will try a few meals then.

These were just two more of the sample package I bought, planning to try the others before I start ordering food for this year. I've liked them all so far and would rate them between 4-5 on a scale of 5. The Coconut Rice and Cuban Black Beans would have to be at the top of any such meals I have eaten. They have added a couple of breakfasts and a breakfast/dessert - Cinnamon Cherry Crisp - that sounds good for a change of pace.

Another quite different and interesting sounding change of pace breakfasts to try is Backpackers Bistro's Espresso Porridge. They also have some vegetarian dinners that might be of interest, as well as some other dinners.

I haven't tried anything from Backpacker's Bistro before. In fact they really were not even on my radar, but looking at their website it looks like there worth a try. I usually have oatmeal for breakfast and toss a couple of dehydrated breakfast in the pack just for a change of pace or for days when I have a little more time to kill. In any case, I'll have to try a couple of the items you've mentioned.

I did just fire off an order for the two new entrees that Heather's Choice has ...Chicken Mole and African Peanut Stew. They discontinued their Doro Wat and Tomotillo Rancheros, so I'm interested in trying their new offerings. I personally like their meals, but generally warn folks that their meals can pack a lot of spice and heat.

Anyway, thanks again for the suggestions for new commercial dehydrated food to try. It's always nice to add a few new items to the menu!

Let us know how you like Heather's two new dinners. I wasn't aware of them, but they sound good, especially the African Peanut Stew. I really like the Salmon Chowder.

I tried two more Taster Packs the other day - Triple Peanut Slaw and Ratatouille w/Nutty Quinoa Pilaf. The Triple Peanut Slaw was good, zesty dressing. The Ratatouille was good, but my least favorite one so far. I'm not a fan of eggplant though, but would eat it again.

There's only one more to sample and I've liked all 6 so far well enough to eat again and most well enough to want to eat again.
