barehook: "Mike, did you happen to have a length on the smallmouth with which you started this thread?"
It was a little over 21. The lure, the ZMAN ShadZ, that I used is 5 inches long to give you a little perspective.

I wish I could stop the hands of time when I look back at these pics of the kids, they grow up so fast. This is my youngest and he was so excited that he caught, handled and released this pike all on his own.

Thanks Mike. I caught a few larger ones besides the one in the photo on Jean later in the day. A bud who happened to be paddling by snapped a photo.
My first time on Jean and it looks to be a superb fishing lake. It took me a while to find the big females and they ended up being 30 to 35 foot deep. I guess that’s not surprising as Jean is a fairly clear lake and it was mid day in early September.
Any smallie tips Mike on smallie presentations in September for deep fish ?

I know there has to be some more great fish pics out there from this year. Don't be shy, post a fish picture. Help me get through the northwoods withdrawal I'm experiencing right now that continues until May.....haha. Thanks for sharing!

Knife Lake at the end of May. Not the greatest photo, but on a solo trip it can tough to properly frame the shot with a fish eager to get back in the water and a dog eager to investigate the still hooked fish.
No shot of any adult can compete with the happy face of a kid with a fish they just caught.

You just need to train the dog to work the camera.....haha. And so true, it is hard to compete with the kid pics :)

In early September I am still throwing topwater mostly and if this isn't producing then I move towards a subsurface presentation with a ZMAN ShadZ using a Zulu rig. Maybe you needed to scout some flats in about 8 to 10 feet of water with scattered boulders? Any moving water is always a good place to check.
Towards the end of September and into October, the lakes will begin to turnover and fishing will become very difficult. When this takes place, head to the moving water areas. Rivers do not turnover, they are too shallow. These are areas where a green pumpkin tube along with ¼ oz. jig really shines. Fish the water flowing out of the lake, the river or creek between the lakes and the plunge pool at the far end.
After the turnover phase, most of the smallmouth transition towards deep reefs. This is where electronics or a good contour map comes in handy. There are no contour maps of the Quetico lakes. If you are like me and don’t have either, then you must rely on finding these reefs the old fashioned way by trolling a deep diving lure. If you don’t want to lose a good lure to a snag, I suggest you bring a few old ones. Once you find these reefs, big smallmouth can be found bunched up on these rocky reefs or small humps. You will need lures that can reach them, so heavier jigs, ¼ oz. or more will be required. I still prefer to use tubes fished vertically during this time of the year. Lip-less rattle crankbaits in a crawdad or shad color “yo-yoed” vertically can be effective, as well as blade baits. Black or white twister tail jigs, white hair jigs or silver blade baits can also be presented slowly along these reefs and humps.

Very Nice! Thanks for sharing! I have more people ask me about the Zulu rig than any other lure or presentation I ever used. I'm thinking about writing a new article about Zulu fishing to follow up on what I have learned since the last article back in 2008.
I know there is no magical lure, but this has been as close as it comes for me :)

Myself and two friends passed you on Knife Lake during our Border Route trip this past May. At the time, I believe you and your pup were onshore of an island as we were headed towards Ottertrack. It was a pretty windy day if I recall at the time we passed.
I believe you were on or near an island approximately 1 mile east of Dorothy's Island, which looks almost exactly where you are located during this photo.
That's super cool....thanks for sharing!

On my first cast with a QM-rigged Zulu, I caught a 19-inch bass and I caught bass on six of my first eight casts, the smallest being 17 inches. When it comes to fishing advice, I like Mike.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

I don't rig anything on my solo trips just use self timer on camera.

These are all from our trip early June up to Kawnipi through the falls chain. Best trip I have ever done. 7 nights, so many fish, 1 really nasty storm, nice days and rainy days. 3 other great guys. 1 hook in the foot of my buddy, 1 long day of bushwacking to some solid fishing, some BIG wind and some dead calm...no moose or bear unfortunately. We all got the grand slam. 1 guy got it in 1 day, the other 3 of us got it in 2. Fantastic trip. The only subpar part, and I am REALLY nit picking here, was the size of walleyes...really nothing over 21 and most all the same 18-20. Decent numbers and great eaters but nothing pushing the tape. The two pike I caught below are NOT the same fish, one 35inch and one 36inch, caught within 20 min of each other in the same bay on Kawnipi. Both my personal bests. One guy caught a 38 and 39, 1 in the chain, 1 on Kawnipi. Hope the pictures come through...

That is awesome. I've had that happen twice in my life, once on the Wisconsin River and once in northwestern Ontario. In Ontario, I hooked one bass, which dove, and when I worked up back to the canoe, I had two bass on the lure. On the Wisconsin River, it looked like they hit my surface lure at the same moment.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

Been up 20-25 times with my family but never just my Dad. Finally got a Father/Son trip in 2018 and we pounded the Walleyes. Nothing huge but it was a massacre. This was late September and it started snowing on us shortly after this photo. Got down to 20 degrees at night. Awesome memories.

Who would have thought tossing an xrap would catch me the biggest walleye of the trip while 5 other guys are jigging leeches with no luck. "
I have out fished guys for walleye using a Zulu while they were using live leeches in the past.
