This will be our 4th annual father/son BWCA fishing trip for my son and me. He is 8 years old now and loves top water bass fishing! The last two years we went into Wood Lake and camped 3-4 nights which has been good! Looking to try somewhere new this next year. We leave the day school is out in early June. He loves action, so big fish is not nearly as important as just catching fish! Looking for recommendations on other lakes to try that would include a portage or two to get in and we could camp/fish for 4-5 days! Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Another easy trip would be to put in on Moose Lake and travel to Wind. One easy portage and some good campsites. The northeast bay is loaded with nice smallies. We’ve had a blast there with top water. Let me know if you’d like more info

If you go to Wind Lake make a day trip over to Indiana Lake.

Edit........... ah crud.... I missed the "top water bass" the first time I read your post. Sorry, I wasn't through my 1st cup of coffee yet. Oops... but I'll leave my info here just in case you like plentiful eater size walleye.

Each year I do a short/easy basecamp trip with one of my daughters. They each did their first trip when they were 5 and my oldest is now 13. Each year we go to a new location. Here are 2 trips that I think really fit as an easy trip with a kid in the bow .

EP 66 Crocodile, but park at the East Bearskin public access and take the 120 rod portage to Crocodile. It's a long skinny lake where the eater size walleye are plentiful. My then 11 yo oldest daughter and I had the lake to ourselves and the walleye were easy to find.
EP 39 Baker to Jack. 2 short portages to get to Kelly and then a 72 to get to Jack. The lakes are more like rivers because they are very skinny so wind doesn't cause much a problem with a kid in the bow. Lots of moose in the area.... we saw 5 while traveling from the EP to Jack and there were 2 different sets of cows/calves and a bull hanging out on Jack while I was there with my then 9yo oldest daughter. We caught a lot of walleye during our stay on Jack. There is an old mine off of the portage to Jack from Kelly.

If you decide on one of these locations let me know and I'll give you more info. I love seeing parents getting their kids in the bwca.
