This past Fall I went on a solo trip, starting at the Homer Lake entry point. I hoped to get a particular campsite that, from a review I read, had wolf scat everywhere. Cool! It's not that I'm a big fan of wolf scat. I just hoped to hear some wolf howls late at night, something I've only heard once before.

When I arrived at the site, I found....no wolf scat at all. To be honest, I was a little relieved and a little disappointed. Still, it was a very nice site.

On my second night, there was an absolute downpour. Rain, more rain, high winds, and more rain. Fortunately, my tent stayed nice and dry and I mostly slept well.

On the following morning, about 20 feet from my tent was a pile of...something. Not sure what. Could it be the illusive wolf scat I expected to find? With all that rain, it got kind of washed out.

I began looking around for tracks. The ground was smooth as can be from all the rain, but, near the firegrate I found...some kind of print. It certainly wasn't a classic K-9 type of print. Maybe it was a wolf print, and the wolf pushed kind of sideways to make a sharp turn. I saw what MIGHT be a claw mark. I wasn't sure though. Several inches away was a similar mark, this one being more feint. They were about as far apart as a wolf's front paws! How cool! I had a wolf in my camp in the middle of the night! The upturned ground in each mark was probably due to the wolf suddenly bounding to one side. Maybe it got startled (maybe my snoring?). I was beginning to impress myself with my ability to reconstruct what happened the night before, using such minimal information. I had no experience as a tracker. Maybe I was some kind of natural....just a gift of some sort.

It was then that the clouds began to part and I realized that I was not looking at wolf tracks. I had been carefully examining the prints left by.....my Hellinox Chair.

Ahh, imagination is a powerful thing!

FUNNY (LOL)! Sounds like my "Bigfoot encounter" here on the farm several deer seasons ago.

I had driven to my hunting spot on the back of the farm because I'd overslept. My spot was about 1/2 mile away from a little grove of cedars where I parked the truck. It was just daybreak and foggy. I had slowly walked about 50 yards where there was a field on on side and a creek and some deep woods on the other. I noticed a slight movement in the shadows and there he was....about 50 yards away, standing on two legs, a shadowy, hairy figure. I've read those accounts where in this situation many people want to get closer for a better look? NOT ME, but I was too scared to move back towards the truck. All at once, in one motion, it silently went down on all fours, turned around and was gone! I had seen my first BEAR on the farm! Bigfoot or bear, however, I had too much adrenalin coursing through my veins to even think about shooting a high powered rifle. Everyone was a little skeptical but a few months later my neighbor "Shot" him a few times on the game cam. But at first sight.....
