I thought you all would like to see an old map I bought at the antique store in Grand Marais. I bought is about 10 years ago for $5.00. I found it again in the basement and scanned it last night. It is large so I had to make six pages. It is a map made by the Johnson co in Duluth in 1939. It shows it's age but is not to bad for being 70 years old.

Way cool. Thanks for posting it!

Now I'll have to sit down and start comparing portages etc and see what's changed over the years.

tmcd, You are correct, they are switched.??? What surprised me was the train tracks through some parts of the map. Why were they there, logging?

And mining? (There are some old mining sites in the woods along the Kekakabic Trail.)

Cool map- I'll give you 4 bucks for it, with the mistake and all. How big is it?

It is 19"x23" Sorry gutmon but I collect maps of the BWCA area and would hate to part with this one. I think I will put it in a frame and hang it down in the Man Cave.

VERY Cool Beans!!!!!

Very, very interesting to see where all the old CCC camps were located. Plus it shows lookout towers, cabins on Cherokee & Jasper amoung others, plus the old Forest Service boathouse on Brule.........

I really enjoy looking over things like this. Thanks for taking the time to post it. Very much appreciated!

Those rail lines were primarily for the transport of lumber. I’ve read there was occasionally passenger service, but can no longer find the webpage that describes those rail lines. Most forest roads in Lake and Cook Counties were once railroad grades for the logging industry.

Any antique maps you'd be interested in parting with? Looking to frame a genuine on my wall. Got the reproduction framed, looking for a real one. Thanks.

I own a 1920's map of the arrowhead that I got professionally mounted. It cost 10x for the framing than it did for the map!

It shows a lot of locations where there were cabins, resorts, and native peoples grave sites.

The Quetico park people once asked to view the map. On another occasion FS personnel asked to view the map and for me to refrain from posting the location of the grave sites. These maps are real treasures.

It even shows a proposed route for the Ely to Gunflint road that was never built.

It was produced by the same group that did the common reproduction map you see online frequently, the group that had the swastika in their logo.
