I really like bringing Cracklin Oat Bran as a snack. It could be mixed with fruit and chocolate, but it might not retain its crunch. Its sweet and really doesn't taste like a fiber cereal. I like it.
how about a chex mix snack? My aunt makes some from scratch using the cereals with pretzels tossed in too. I think she sometimes has nuts in there, but not always.
My kids just eat the M&Ms anyway... who needs nuts?

My wife is also allergic to nuts so we've experimented over the past couple years. I've tried various cereals but they all seem to get a stale and loose their crunch quickly on a warm and humid day.
Cracklin Oat Bran got soft quickly. Chex tend to get crunched easily by the weight of the raisins and M&Ms. Cheerios get stale quickly.
About the best cereal I've used was Quaker Oatmeal Squares. It didn't get crushed and stayed relatively crunchy. But it's sweet so it can be a bit overwhelming with all those M&Ms.
My wife is also mildly allergic to soy, so we haven't tried soy nuts but I can see those working well. Sunflower and other seeds may work but can be iffy for people with nut allergies too, as you probably know.
Pretty much the best compromise we've found is pretzels. We use mini-twists or the little "pillows" that you can sometimes find. Those replace the salt the peanuts usually have and so they're good for encouraging water consumption when you're working.
We may try almonds this year since she can eat those, but they're a bit spendy for a lot of them. As mentioned, banana chips are a great addition as well.
We used to just make one or two big bags and dole them out as we went. Now I make more, smaller zip locked bags so things stay fresher. More plastic but then stuff isn't totally mush by day 4.
Nut allergies can be serious! You don't want to mess around with this one! Having an allergic reaction miles from help could be very dangerous. Even m&m's have a warning for those with nut allergies. Do you ever carry an epi-pen for her just in case she comes in contact with something that may contain nuts that you are not aware of? Just some thoughts, good luck! Do lots and lots of research before mixing her trail mix.
I am wondering about this as well. I have braces, which I got last October. I will have them for two summers, so I have two years in which I don't want to be eating regular nuts. They run the risk of being too hard and popping off a bracket, but also once they are chewed a bit they stick in the brackets like nobody's business and are really annoying to get out.
I like the idea of a pretzel replacement (have you ever eaten M&Ms and pretzels at the same time? Absolutely delicious). But, I would like a GORP recipe that has some protein. Soybeans sound too crunchy for me. Sunflower seeds would not pop a bracket, but they pack in the teeth, too.
What to do....I might have to switch from GORP to nutless protein bars for a few years. I also can't eat raisins, though pretzels/raisins/M&Ms does sound pretty good...
I did find this. Corn Nuts would not work for me, but might for you:
If you’re allergic to nuts – this GORP is for you Ingredients: Corn “not really” Nuts (original flavor) Candy Corn M & M’s (plain not peanut) Dry Roasted Sunflower Kernels Sweetened Dried Cranberries (Craisins)
I would think some sort of granola without nuts would be the best cereal-type thing to take. You could make your own with anything in it you want. You could even add some protein powder.

I haven't tried them yet....but I will. I wonder if they will have the same saltiness as my homemade pretzel & M&M mix...

I didn't love them, either. They remind me of malted mik balls (Whoppers)...
I tried the M&Ms finally....I think they are great. Maybe not quite as good as making my own mix, but certainly easier. ;-) They are going on our trip next week...

My Sept trip to Q will include a youth with severe nut allergy. Needless to say, menu planning took on an entirely new level of challenge as well as urgency to watching absolutely ALL of the details. Not only can he not have peanuts or tree nuts, but we have to avoid anything processed in factories that process nuts.
I also searched for a nutless GORP, but settled for several alternatives. Some things I found out:
1) Almost all Hershey chocolate is contaminated - maybe 2% is not. But the label is accurate. 2) Most popular complete pancake and biscuit mixes are also contaminated (processed at same factory as nuts.) 3) Majority of dried fruit is also contaminated by "same factory." 4) Cake mixes, brownie mixes, etc that use Hershey chocolate (most brands) are also off limits. 5) Cliff Bars, Granola bars, etc are all contaminated. 6) Could not find any breakfast bar or diet bar that was clean.
The good news: 1) Sunsweet brand dried fruit is clean. 2) Betty Crocker has many chocolate products that are clean - brownies, cakes, etc. 3) I decided to use Fig Newtons as snack replacement for Cliff Bars, etc. 4) Found many Betty Crocker muffin mixes that are clean - blueberry, apple cinnamon, etc. These make good breakfast items as well as evening dessert with coffee. 5) Found a pineapple upside down mix that will try out this year. 6) Obvious to those with allergy - will take sun butter (sunflower seed "peanut" butter) as general substitute for the normal staple.
Bottom line - be very name brand specific. Several "clean brands" are out there.
Many thanks to Dogwoodgirl and the JMO - it has helped out even more than usual this year.
