O.K. specifically, I am wondering what your single favorite and single worst freezer bag concoction is and why. I have the book, but there are too many recipes to just try them all out in a short, already busy period of time.

Does anyone have any problems with hamburger rehydrating when bathed in boiling water?

my daughter and i have used FBC the last two years for our Isle Royale trips. for the protein, i used packets of chicken, tuna, salmon, etc. didn't try the dehydrated burger. don't see why it wouldn't work, other than time and some additional fuel. can't say that i specifically did any of the recipes from the book, but did use it as inspiration. daughter isn't quite as experimental as i am. did cook and dehydrate pasta for one meal. seemed to work best to cook it to the doneness you want, rinse it with cold water, then dehydrate. when rehydrating, it comes back to where you stopped it. doesn't really cook any further in the cozy.

I dehydrate the "97% lean" hamburger and do not wash it in boling water. Works well for me. Have used it on ten-day trips with no problem.

My favorite FBC meal is curried rice and chicken. (I don't remember if the recipe is in the book, or if I got it from the website)

1 cup rice
1/2 pouch chicken
2 T dried onion
3 tsp curry powder
1 T coconut cream powder
Add boiling water
In separate snack size ziplock put 3 T raisins. In another put 1/4 cup toasted walnuts. Add those after rice mixture is cooked. Delish!

I also like the chicken almond rice (p.49 of the book)

I have dehydrated hamburger. I just don't like it. It takes a while to rehydrate, and I find it to be too chewy to my liking.

For the burger, when cooking it, make sure it's in very small pieces.

We did not like recipes that had much dried milk in it, like the desserts. Yuck. All the main dishes and the breakfasts we tried, we liked. Liked the pea and carrot salad with ranch dressing (forget the name). Liked the buttery trail carrots. Preferred the breakfasts with oatmeal or couscous over rice-based.

When we tried orange salmon it came out way too orange. I think its a great idea, with alot of potential, but it would take a long time to perfect.

Its gonna happen.

A couple of weeks ago my Scout Troop got together to plan our meals for an upcoming hike. I chose half a dozen meals from the FBC book and prepared them while the guys worked on the menu.

They didnt care for the Trail Grits (grits, bacon, cheese). They also didnt care much for the Curried Vegetable Couscous (couscous, Knorr vege soup mix, chix and curry). I liked this one.

They really like Miss Qs Tater Delite (mashed potatos, freeze dried corn, chix topped with french fried onions) and Cranberry Chicken Rice (rice, chix, FD corn, craisins). They also liked the Trail Shake (instant breakfast mix, custard mix, powdered milk) pretty well.

I used to be able to get hamburger in a pouch like the chicken/tuna. Dont know if it is still available, I havnt seen it in a while. I tried once. It was okay but not good enough to use frequently.

Ive tried dehydrating my own hamburger too. It was not too bad but I had difficulty getting it to rehydrate completely. I suspect that was mainly because I was using an alcohol stove so did not have a long boil before running out of fuel.

Chill -- Another way to rehydrate burger is add water in the morning and let it sit all day. Then, warm up briefly before eating.

I've found this is definitely the way to go.

I dunno...is this safe? Sounds like a spoilage issue to me.

I have only rehydrated hamburger once, but I had no problems. I was following a FBC recipe.

I've never had any problem with it. Perhaps, if you are concerned about spoilage, just wait and add water around noon.

We have all grown up with refrigeration. It "ain't all its cracked up to be."

My favorite is the one I contributed to Sarah's efforts.

The seafood chowder recipe.
