Was just wondering if any of you have ever cooked a turkey in a garbage can? A couple years ago we spent Thanksgiving with our son who was climbing with a bunch of friends in Bishop Ca. To cook the turkey I used a old drum I had behind the shop. Cleaned it out good with fire and it was ready to go. My wife was really concerned about this setup!! When it was done even she admitted is was the best turkey we have ever had! We are headed back to Bishop this year to see if I can get lucky again. Curious to see if any of you have any good tips for me this year.

Could be new material for Jeff Foxworthy :)

Looks like a really big Dutch oven.

Very interesting setup.
I do ours every year in a Weber style grill, with apple wood smoke.

Never in a garbage can. I have had it a few times (not Thanksgiving) in a deep fryer. DO NOT do this in your garage! haha. We have done it a few times while at rental cabins with the family :)

Not a garbage can, but an oven made of aluminum foil wrapped around a 5 gallon bucket for a form. Kept fresh coals under, it took about 2 1/2 hr. to cook a 12 lb. bird.

Snakecharmer, you might be a redneck if you cook Thanksgiving turkey in a barrel. I love it!! Wife got a big kick out of that.

I cooked one in a dutch oven once. I turned it into a large piece of charcoal. :(

Never tried it. Probably will work well. The best turkey I've ever had was soaked in honey brine overnight, then stuffed with dry seasoned breadcrumbs and chunk celery, then smoked with apple wood,

Just got back from Bishop Ca. and the barrel turkey turned out great. With dutch oven sweat potatoes and dressing. Along with mashed potatoes green bean casserole and a bunch of other stuff I can't recall!! We fed about 12 climbers. Really had a good trip. I would of posted another picture but it would have been the same as the first post except this year I was wearing a green jacket!! Larry
