My buddy and I went out winter camping last weekend. First time this year. Had to look at a snow depth map of Minnesota in order to even find a spot to go to. Ended up going into Bear Head Lake State Park just outside of Ely. Great park, will wanna see it again in the summer.

Ended up hearing some wolves at night and the silence. That was nice. Also saw the northern lights and snapped a couple pictures.

I was less than 40 miles south east of there last weekend. Had I known the glow was going to turn into full fledged northern lights, I would have stayed up later. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and my calves were sore from walking in it without snow snowshoes all weekend. Last Saturday at sunset a wolf howled not too far from me. Since that set off the neighbor’s dogs, I know it was closer than 500ft away.

A strange thing happened while cooking my meal around 5pm last Friday. I was listening to the AM station originating out of Nashwauk when it disappeared. I re-tuned the dial and suddenly I am getting loud and clear traffic reports from the 401 and 403. Who knew that Monday was also a holiday in parts of Canada? The station originated from Mississauga, almost 700 miles away. I wonder if the Aurora had anything to do with that.
