It is time to start the June 2012 Photo Contest.

First an important note. If you see that you have won the contest or a prize in the contest, please email your address and choice of hat, shirt, or bandanna to me.

The theme for this month's contest is "Rock".

Monthly Category: Picture of Canoe Country Rock

Winner will receive an additional prize of leather work from Dicecupmaker with the bwca.com flying moose on it. Thank you Dicecupmaker!

Thanks to Cooke Custom Sewing (CSS) for sponsoring the year end prize!

Remember 1 entry per person please. This helps us vote accurately.

Rules:
- You must be signed in as a member with a valid email address in your profile to enter (or win).
- You can only enter one photo per monthly contest. You can enter the same photo if it did not win in a previous month.
- You must be the photographer of the photo and have the rights to post it.
- Photos are entered in the contest by making a reply posting to this message and using the "Add a photo to this message" link during composition. This will allow you to upload a photo from your computer to the contest or allow you to select a photo which you have already loaded into your photo gallery on this site. If you want to enter your photo in another way, please contact us.
- Please describe in the message the location of the photo.
- Judging will be done by the www.bwca.com staff and moderators.

This was a great trip some years back. Guy caught a 32" Walleye (that I was privileged to net) and a very fun time. That trip was one of the first in our now Annual voyages as a solid "group". Great Memories.
Trip was on Brule lake in '03

*Disclaimer* I have to give props to low powered camera's Photo. This was a 2003 Point and shoot Camera. It was a Sony Cybershot. I then used Picasa. That is a sweet program, it did nice work. Let me know your thoughts.

** The Photo on the bottom (Picasa's "I am feeling Lucky" handy work applied) is my submission.

slabs of Graywhacke on La Croix.for years i thought this was some sort of lava flow but a geology map of the BW shows this part of LLC to be all this sort of rock.
i call this Bath Tub Bay because of the shape of the bay as seen on a map and the smooth shoreline.

it's just a level trail thru the woods.

I'm fairly certain I've grounded a kevlar into this rock. Was very choppy water and couldn't see it. Just the thunk of my paddle hitting and then that awful scraping sound."

I'm pretty sure my Dad caught a 19 inch smallie off those rocks in 2000.

Not for contest just sharing. I found this in very low water on Insula. It is clearly notched on one end and beveled to a point on the other. Many people have said this isn't an artifact but I read that very long ago the natives used this sandtone for spear tips. I also know I'm not supposed to remove these from the BWCA but yes, I took it home and it sits on a shelf in my bathroom. I'd love to donate it to a museum and get a professional opinion on the authenticity.

Hey there 108cneil.

I just bought a book, Dorothy Molter, The Root Beer Lady by Sarah Guy-Levar and Terri Schocke. They are the two women who run The Dorothy Molter Museum.

In the book is the story of the Ribbon Rock! It is actually a natural rock that consists of a banded iron formation. The ribbons are magnetite, jasper & chert. It is believed that it was carried to the region by a glacier. Pretty cool.

I saw the Ribbon Rock for the first time this year. It really is amazing! I need to pick up a copy of that book. I have always been fascinated by people who chose to live life in their own way.
Thanks for the reply!

I don't remember the exact coordinates but there are a few miles of hiking trails within the Soudan Mine Park. This rock is adjacent to one of the trails and gravel road.

Even though it's late, feel Stumpy's photo should win this month. Everything about that pic is perfect.

That was me & yes, I made it.
That was 13 years ago....don't know if I'd try it these days. There was not much of a "running" start & it was uphill at that.
If the photo is late, don't make special consideration for me.
Thanks
