Found in the stomach of a pike caught in South Kawishiwi River last week. What is it? Eelpout? Eel? Snakehead?

It's bent in the middle 'cause it was folded over double inside the pike's stomach.

+4 on the pout

Agreed, it looks like an eelpout, but I thought those only lived in deep water lakes.

One can run into Ellpout on most any depth lake. I have seen them in a lake which has a max depth of 30 feet. I find them in shallow bays all the time.

Looks like an alien.

I'd guess pout as well. Only other thought I had would be maybe a dogfish. But its hard to tell for sure with most of the skin removed.

Did it have teeth?

Looks like a bull moose lost something when he went for a swim!

Don't camp with people who pout!

Wow your lucky day. Now you can have pout instead of pike.

Yeah, we should have fried it up along with the pike fillets. the pike was pretty darn tasty, though.

Nah, too long and skinny for a dogfish (bowfin). Used to catch those all the time on trot line & jugs in the Illinois River backwaters...my Dad used to fry 'em up. Seen a lot of those, but never seen one of these!

Didn't check for teeth. Bowfin don't inhabit BWCA waters anyway, do they?

I'm in the Lamprey camp. Too long and skinny for a pout maybe, and the head looks more like a Lamprey.

interesting photo essay on minnesota public radio web site on the lamprey. without seeing its mouth, i'd guess bowfin, eelpout or lamprey, i hope there aren't lamprey in the bwca.

Was there any barbs under the chin? Like one barb on the end of the lower chin. If there was it was a burbot(or eel bout). The head looks flat in front like a burbot and what tail is left looks like a burbot. What skin I see present has the pattern expected also.
They are a cool water fish and like colder water during the hot times. I would not be surprised to see a few in that area. If they are present in waters not suitable for them, they will actually lose weight in the summer.

I'm not certain, but I bet it tasted like chicken...

I doubt it is a lamprey. If that is an eye I'm seeing, it is in the wrong place for a lamprey. I vote for either burbot or alien larva.

It probably has slight overtones of loon with a bit of eagle for bite...

Burbot is rumored to be a favored pike prey item. I could see why as its soft without lots of prickly spines and such. Savage Gear has a new Burbot imitation which looks rather awesome.
