During the past several days, I've been wondering about our friend CORIOLIS, or John Brunck. He had been battling cancer, and the last time I saw him was at the Southern Wingnight camp out in May. He seemed to be doing fairly well, and he was en route to Ely for a BW trip with wife Dory.

This AM I got on-line to check and was saddened to find his Obituary .

May the Lord take you in his arms John. I will miss your wit and friendly smile.

My deepest condolences to Dory and John's family.

Sincerely yours, Andy

Oh mannnnn. AndySG, thanks for caring and thanks for checking and thanks for letting us know.

My heart goes out to Coriolis' family. Guess I'll be raising another paddle in August and think of him.

Paddler’s Heaven

When we each reach the end of our trip here on earth
May the winds be always gentle and behind us
Our packs light and balanced
With the fish biting always

May our partners know how much they mean to us
And the time we’ve shared together
It’s nothing but a gift
From the master outfitter

May the fires burn bright and long
And the portages, smooth and all downhill
The laughing of the loon
Reminds us all to smile

We actually could bury cancer as it seems we give it to ourselves with various technologies. The last I read, they haven't found any tumors in Egyptian mummies.

Very sad news. I enjoyed his company at both 2011 and 2012 TC Wingnites.
Despite his grave condition he was upbeat, brave and proud and great to talk with. He had a female dog named Freddie like I do.
He will be missed.
My sympathy goes out to his family.
Thanks for thinking about him and searching for answers Andy.
He was thrilled to get that BWCA.com Amok hat last Fall he is wearing in the photo.

I feel extremely priviledged to have met him. He was a throwback, Marine Corps I believe, a genuine tough old badass but he didn't make an issue of it, you could just feel it. Guys like that don't need to ACT tough. He was kinda quiet and could seem aloof if you weren't paying attention, nothing could be less true. He just wasn't a pretentious guy, he knew who he was and was very comfortable with that. I don't blame him. Farewell my friend, we'll all paddle that lake some day.

PS--When possible I'll drive 100 miles out of my way to eat a Cincinnati chili dog, probably get a little misty about it

Again.another paddles on.

The only good thing about having cancer now is that in olden days you died early and in pain. Now at least one can keep paddling the BWCA while battling the beast. The quality of life is better for longer.

I lost a paddling friend Memorial Day weekend. She went biking 40 miles on a Friday and died Saturday morning of liver cancer.

The bad thing is we do not have chances to say final goodbyes.

I also first met John at the 2012 spring wingnight. I could not help but be impressed and inspired by his will and desire to live what life he had left, on his own terms. And by how Dory supported him. John clearly had made a determination of what was important to him, and siezed the opportunities available. John was leaving from there to do a solo in the BW. Dory told me she was nervous about the solo, but understood what it meant to John. At the wingnight, how much time did John spend cooking his contribution to the pot luck dinner, a dinner that for the most part he could not participate in?

I knew him only a short time, and I was touched. My heart goes out to his family.

Glad did I live and gladly die,

Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

I had the privilege of spending time with John at a few Wingnights. My first impression was that he was a tough and quiet guy. As I got to know him and watch his actions, I was so VERY wrong. He was a loving, gentle and sensitive man. His attitude and desire to live life to the fullest was unbelievable! Dory was so lucky to have John. He truly loved her as she did him.

I will miss John the Chili man. I still have a package of chili mix he gave me. I think it will stay in the cupboard a long time and I guarantee I will smile every time I see it.

My deepest condolences to Dory, John's family and to all whose lives were touched by knowing John.

This is from Marsha:
"My heart goes out to Dory and family. Just wanted to say something about this man I had met during Springfield Wing Night. What a trouper but much more than that, he reminded me exactly (especially looks and mannerisms) of my grandfather, Tom Gannon, whom I last saw when he was in his late 50's. What I did learn from John at the campsite was that he worked at Chanutte Air Force Base. Guess what...my grandfather taught 'airplane mechanics' in Rantoul on same base. My grandfather was also a quiet man, when he spoke it meant something. I just bet they were more alike than just appearance, mannerisms, tender heart, a real man's man."

I am deeply saddened at this news and express my deepest sympathies to John's family and friends. I wish I had gotten to know him. I believe CORIOLIS has now gone beyond the pain and suffering of cancer and has rejoined former loved ones that have gone before him. My father lost a battle with cancer 15 years ago and if John loved a good story I'll bet they've already met.

Of course, he's in good hands:
John 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

George (bapabear)

May waters rise to meet you. May wind and current be always at your back. May the Good Lord paddle with you, And may yours be the lightest pack.

Oh Man.. I just saw this. A few months back John sent me a patch that he had. The patch was one for 'AMOK'that he must have purchased at a wing night silent auction. He said I should keep this patch and pass it forward when I felt the time was right. We shared having cancer.
I have marked down on my calendar at work to send a birthday card to him July 24th. I am so sad that I did not make the spring wing get together that he attended.

Man..................

My sympathy to all his family.

Bummer Indeed! Both John and Dory were two awesome People! So glad I got to meet them both at 2 wingnights. John loved going to our camping wingnights. Dory said he was so excited to get there, that he wanted to drive straight through from Cincinnati.

He had a zest for life and was a very thoughtful Loving person.
I know he is up with Phil paddling their little Hearts out!

He loved his BWCA.com hat with AMOK on the back and it was so cool that he refused to take the price tag off. He did treasure that hat indeed!
I would love to hear about his solo trip too. Hope it went well for him.
I still have a packet of his Cincinnati chili as well! If I ever do use it, it will be a dish made with lots of Love!

I do hope one of us can locate Dory so we can still include her in our family.

God Bless and Rest In Peace.

I have been wondering how his trip went also. I hope he got to take his trip. I am glad I had a chance to meet him at wing night also. RIP John. Thoughts and prayers to him and his family.

I had the pleasure of meeting both Dory and John at the last Fall wing nite... good people.

This is Johns Step-Daughter, Chloe, My mom (Dory) would like to thank EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU for the immense amount of support that you have sent to our family. I signed on here today to put up a notice but I see you all have that taken care of, reading all the posts about john had me sitting here crying my eyes out, he is terribly missed and loved but everyone is happy he is no longer suffering and in a better place.
John left behind a loving Wife Doris A Brunck and 4 (step) children of whom he treated as we were his own, Chris (Katie), Cassie (Sam), Clint (Ashlea) and Chloe (Chris) and 5 grandchildren (with another on the way!).
The BWCA was a huge part of his life. Portaging was one of his favorite things to do and as I sit here at his computer in his office I look up at the bulletin board on the wall and see a BWCA.com Patch, A Sticker that says “I’d rather be at Packsack Canoe Trips & Log Cabins”, a letter from Gene & Jane, Maps of the Boundary Waters, a Packsack Magnet & a copy of his Best Day Trip Ever.
John has Photo Albums upon Photo Albums of all the trips he has taken up there over the years. John took my brother up to the Boundary Waters for the first time a few years back and he says it was an experience he will never forget.
John loved making these trips and talked about them constantly. He loved everything about it, I never had the honor of going with the guys on their trips (personally I didn’t think I would be able to make the portage) but now that Johns not here to take me and show me I feel like I should come up at least one time to see the beauty in person instead of in his pictures….
The stories he would tell and the way his eyes lit up, you could just tell that he was meant to be there and that it was in his heart and soul... Thanks to everyone for the prayers and well wishes! My mom hasn’t read all of the posts yet I only read her a few and she got too emotional to finish, she will eventually get on here to be able to contact you all, she just needs a little more time.
If you really want to honor him, do the best you can at any and everything you do, he hated it when people did a half-assed job on something instead of trying their best, he always said “Leave no trace” (referring to portaging) he always made sure his site was spotless before he left onto the next one and said that everyone should do the same.
P.S- The sticker is STILL on the hat

Chloe, I was so glad to see your post. The tribute to John is absolutely beautiful and so very touching. He had a lot of Love to give and it shows in your post as well as the tribute. He was very fortunate to have all of you in his life. Thanks for sharing.
Please tell Dory once again how much we are thinking of her and Please Give her a "Big Hug" from all of us!

I do hope that you can make a trip up to the Boundary Waters some time. Know that you all have a family up here that could certainly help you plan an easy trip that you would all be comfortable with.

Take Care and God Bless!
