I am camping at the South Kawishiwi Campground south of Ely in a few weeks. We are looking to paddle up the river to where it enters the BWCA for a day paddle. Does anyone know if you can get a daily permit where the river enters the BWCA? If so, where do I have to get the permit as it doesn't appear on the map that there is a landing there?
Also wondering if the three short portages are rapids or if anyone has done them.
You might as well stop at the Forest Service headquarters in Ely to get one. Sometimes the day permits run out before being refilled at entry points anyway. I haven’t been on that particular stretch of the Kawishiwi so I can’t help you there.
There is no daily permit kiosk station where the river enters the BWCA. Only at designated entry points. The S.Kaw EP is about 4 miles from the campground(by road). The portage closest to the campground is around a small waterfall/rapids. The portages are around rapids that may be floatable depending on water level, type of canoe, experience...enter at the EP and paddle down to the campground if you have 2 cars/walk/hitch
If you can find a way to have someone drop you off or take you back to your car, a great daytrip is to enter at the portage and paddle back to the campground. Depending on your skill and comfort level with swift water, with this years high water you should be able to avoid all but the last portage by running the rapids. Even though the entire route will be out of the BWCA proper, it is still very "BWCA-ish". Good fishing below all of the swift water. There are a couple of shallow spots where you need to be careful for some large rocks lurking just under the water, especially if you're in kevlar or wood.

Before fighting fire with fire, remember that the fire department usually uses water.

Thanks for the great information. We are staying at the campground and planning to paddle into the BWCA for the day. We are both very experienced in the BWCA but could only squeeze in a weekend before our big trip in August.

Thanks for the information! We are going to pick up a daily permit while we are in Ely :)
