Urban Paddling this Tuesday July 24 6:30 PM, Silver lake in Columbia Heights on the North end of the Metro. Thursday July 26 6:30PM Nokomis Lake near the beach on the west side of the Lake. Come paddle and enjoy the water. Not the BWCAW but a chance to wet the paddle and opportunities to better your paddling skills.
They are not fly in lakes. On the Lake next door to where I leave is the MN seaplane base. So I am privileged to have then on there landings and takeoffs to go overhead. I am one lake upstream from them. In 17 years only 1 plane has landed on my lake and it took 'em several tries to get off the water, as the lake we are on is so shallow. Paddle night!
quote AndySG: "Are either of those fly in lakes? If so, send a float plane down to Central Illinois to pick me and my canoe up. Dang.....I wish I lived closer."
quote rharjes: "Anyone that has ever been to these know what to expect? Just a nice urban paddle around the lake with other paddling enthusiasts?
We might head out there if the girlfriend finishes her homework!!"
I would be interested in knowing this too, I am under the impression it is mostly guys doing freestyle canoeing, if it was just general touring I'd love to show up some time.
These gatherings are just an opportunity to get together and paddle. some have decided freestyle does not excite them and will go and put in a lap or two about the lake. Others will get into practicing freestyle maneuvers or practice other paddling skills. Last night there were 6 solo canoes and one Tandem on the water. The tandem was towing a floaty toy for the kids to play on. Several solos did a tour about the lake while other practiced on skills and generally caught up on each others lives. It is just enjoyable to paddle and be with others who enjoy paddling. There is no memberships, no secret handshake, No particular hill or style of paddling is required. Folks come and go to fit their schedule. This Thursday/26/12 around 6:30 on the north west end of Nokomis folks will gather to paddle to their own drummer.

That’s great to know Dan, I spend allot of time on the Minneapolis lakes as they are close to my house and the lack of motor boats is always a plus. I never knew there were touring folks that showed up, I may try and stop by this evening..
Last night there was 2 Bell Magic's, a Flashfire, Wildfire, Homebuilt tortured plywoodhull, Vagabond, McKenzie Button, Wenona Wilderness, and a 14' Mohawk. Turned into a wonderfull quiet evening for paddling. Next week Tuesday July 31st Silver lake in Columbia Heights 6:30PM or on Thursday August 2nd on Lac Lavon in Apple Valley. Open to anyone of any paddling preferences.

Thanks so much for all the pointers and borrowing me the paddle, it was very informative and I had a great time. You and Sue really know your stuff! I think I will try and make these as much as the schedule allows.

JB, we can agree on this :)
Having Andy at all the Mini wing nights, what could be better?

I wish Merri and we lived a little closer so we could join you sometime. I'm particularly interested in your "submarine" maneuver! I would like to do a day trip on the Kinnickinnic River this fall, any interest? Mark Morrall
i took my wildfire our for the first time today. wow, do i ever need some practice and instruction! also, some tips on raising the seat. hope to be there thursday.
The Kinny sounds great this fall. I may have a conflict with a TBD date of overseas Installation of some machinery I have designed. Kanoes, For seat drops it is best to try some inexpensive dowels with through holes. For Kneeling the front dowel should be about an inch shorter than the stern dowels. Once a height is pleasant then copy the form of the original drops with the new length. Looking forward to next weeks paddling as well.

The early Roylex Yellowstone hulls were labeled Wildfire and the early ones had aluminum reinforced vinyl gunnels that would probably hold the drops. Kevin Carr put an Wenonah adjustable/ kneeling seat in my Bell roylex "Yellowstone". I will check it out in the light of day, and call Kevin for accurate advice.

Paddling opportunities with other paddlers. Tuesday Eve July 31st 6:30 Silver lake Beach off Stinson in Columbia Heights, or Thursday Evening August 2nd 6:30 PM on the North end of Lac Lavon in Apple Valley.
Kevin says the Wenonah adjustable drop seat is available from Wenonah's accessory sales. All you need to do is make the wooden seat cross bars shorter to match the Yellowstone width and it will rivet in.
a kinni trip sounds great. FYI, the bridge at F is closed and there is no access at that point. you must continue to the st croix and portage (a rather steep hill, or more accurately a very steep hill) at the kinni state park. there is an outfitter in river falls that owns land near the bridge crossing, he has access and will charge a reasonable fee for a shuttle. it is worth it, and no i don't have his number. i lost it.

Hey Kanoes,
I've also seen people raise their seat by putting dowels and seat ON TOP of the aluminum hanger. Mohawk used to sell a kit for this. just a thought
